| I am looking to start shooting long range 500+ yards and eventually 1000 yards. i was thinking on going with a 300 min mag or 300wsm or maybe even a 7 mag. I am looking at a couple of rifles, a savage 10 and a few remington 700s any input form anyone who shoots these ranges would be great. i currently can shot 3-5 inch groups at 300 yards with my ar. But really want to improve my longer ranges. i have a 308 but dont feel that it is a good round for 700+ yard range. i want to get a rifle that i can keep up grading as i improve. Thanks for any help. |

I shoot my 308 out to 1200yards fairly often. I think you are selling the cartridge a bit short. That said there are plenty of LR rounds to look at that will buck the wind better than the 308. The .260 rem being a real popular one. For example, there were a couple instances of my partner/spotter shooting with zero wind dialed at targets in the 500-700 range this weekend with his new 260, while I was running about half a mil of wind on those targets with my 308.
I'd check out some of the LR forums and do some research. I'd also call Tom Sarver at Thunder Valley and pick his brain. He's a big 260 guy, but he can help give you pros/cons to all the rounds you are considering. |

Get to a match at Rayner's or Thunder Valley and see what your .308 will do. I personally wouldn't build a .308, but I wouldn't shitcan it either if it was all I had. I'm pretty fond of the 7mm Rem Mag, but have been playing with a 7mm-08 lately as well. It really is an endless argument between efficiency and performance.
There is so much more to it than just the caliber, but it's hard to explain without just doing it . Besides the rifle in an adequate caliber you'll need a capable scope with target knobs and it helps if you are able to handload for performance. |

I'd look into the optic first. Make sure you have enough vertical adjustment to go the distance. The Scope, base, and rings could run you up to 2K.
If you reload, ignore this comment. Price out some of the 7mm or 300WSM factory ammo before buying the rifle. Everyone I know that has a 7mm that buys ammo rarely shoots the dam thing. I personally like 308 for a few reasons. Loading components are readily available Long barrel life (4-5K) (bolt gun) battle proven Good luck bigohio |
