Will be passing through Tennessee and somewhere between Memphis and Nashville I'll want to be taking a short overnight stay. I don't want to shy off the highway too much but so far I can't seem to find a spot that I'd be willing to stop at with the wife and kiddo that seems safe. Where does the hive suggest?

There's a holiday Inn at hurricane mills/Waverly. I've never stayed at it.

Jackson TN is fine.  Plenty of restaurants and hotels that are safe right off I40.
Christmasville Rd exit on the east side of Jackson less congested, several new hotels there.  Everything is new at that exit.

I'll second Jackson.

I don't have an exact recommendation, but it beats Memphis.

If you're set on staying on the extreme western end of Tennessee, ie Memphis area, I'd suggest Millington north of Navy Road. It's pretty quiet up here.

Jackson is fine, but much closer to Memphis than Nashville. There are several options in Dickson right off of I40. Grab dinner at Colton's or head to downtown Dickson (10-15 mins?) to Zanders or Lil Bite.

This.  I've stayed at the Hampton and HI many many times.    They are fine.
