So I have a pistol made in 1992. As it sits currently, it does not violate any of the AWB items.
I was thinking about adding a threaded barrel to it for suppressor use. I have read on the forums that since it was made pre-94, it should be okay. Has anybody gotten written okay from the ATF or the state saying that it's okay to do? Or is it all based on peoples interpretation of the law at this point. Thanks! |

But it wasn't and AW pre 94 now by adding a threaded barrel is it considered making a new AW? ![]() ctshooters#1 is brainwashing you, lol Hence the face. Honestly these laws are not very black and white. More libtard blue...

ATF is generally concerned with federal law. The threaded barrel prohibition is state law hence ATF generally doesn't care since one would be going to ATF for the can and not anything else. Because of the way the law is written there are those (few) who believe that the handgun had to have the threaded barrel when it was manufactured prior to 9/13/94 or at the very least had to have the threaded barrel on the handgun on 9/13/94. Others (which includes some FFL's), both here and over on CTGT, believe that once a gun is preban you can load as many evil feature you want on it. That the preban did not have to have those evil features on the firearm on or prior to 9/13/94, or when it was manufactured prior to 9/14/94. When in doubt read the preban statute (Sec. 53-202m) and decide for yourself. |

Yes you can add a threaded barrel to a pre 1994 handgun. Be aware that this makes it into a pre ban AW so you can't carry it. Technically you can carry it, but only to those few locations specified in the law, and only if you do so openly if the firearm is loaded.

The pistol in question is a Beretta 21A, so nothing I would carry typically anyways. This would be for "range use". Was also considering getting a second barrel instead of having the factory one threaded. |

My personal choice would be to get a spare barrel, thread it, and only mount it on the pistol when needed for suppressor work. That way, you can still carry the pistol w/o the threaded barrel. I wouldn't recommend swapping barrels back and forth on a 21A. I would hate to drive that pin back and forth through that frame. Used ones are cheap enough that if you really want one for non-suppressor use (i.e. as a small game hunting BUG or for easy carry- both of which the 21 is nice for) that a second is worthwhile; especially if you are willing to sacrifice on finish condition. |

When looking at a second barrel, I looked at a way to try to make an easily removed pin that would have a head on one side, and a thread on the other side for a cap. This way I could just slide out the pin and swap barrels. Although, with the design being a press-fit pin on the frame, I am not sure if a slip-fit pin would do damage to the frame over time. In my lifetime, probably not. |

Hope I can make an unsolicited suggestion..... It appears you want a threaded micro pistol in .22LR? Look at the S&W 2213 and 2214. Most are pre-ban. Already threaded at factory. You need a thread adapter, but tornado tech makes them. Far better pistol than the wonky beretta. |

It's not a cast aluminum frame. And no, my pistol is a 25ACP, not 22LR EDIT: Copied from Beretta's website: "Beretta pistols in the 21 Series utilize a tough forging process for their barrels, while slides are fashioned from solid steel bar stock--and frames from solid aluminum forgings." |

Mine is a .22LR, post ban and non-threaded. I bought mine as part novelty but with some practical considerations in mind as well. Mine is a post ban, so I can't thread it now, though I never had any intention of threading it. The 21A are good pistols and in terms of .22/.25 pocket pistols are high quality. My .22 is very reliable with most loads. I've shot a .25 and know people who have them and they tend to be even more reliable. (Some of the .22 can be very finicky- a gun by gun thing) I believe that a previous owner did remove the barrel from my 21A .22 at least once and in the process did bugger the pin and hole a bit. Even though it is of quality construction, the aluminum is susceptible to damage. (There is also a chip on the opposite side, presumably from where the previous owner, or a gunsmith, had rested it against something hard to drive the pin). Somebody ended up staking the hole to compensate. OP: That sounds like a pretty cool project that you have planned. |
