In the other thread, a bunch of people seemed interested in getting together sometime for dinner.  Looks like the leading preference was either Korean BBQ, the Tilted Kilt, or some other place in/around Baltimore (since that would be pretty central for most of us).

Do we want to try to make something happen this Summer, and do we want to do it during a weekday evening or a weekend?  I'll throw up a poll and see what's shaking.

We could also do a few other things.  Just to throw out a few ideas:

* Get to a range and shoot, perhaps with a theme or a friendly competition.  Perhaps something as simple as "shoot with your newest and oldest guns," either date of manufacture or date of your ownership?  Pick a standard target, and you get 10 shots through each gun, best score out of 20 wins a boobie prize?  I don't know, just something for fun.

* Build party.  I'm sure there's someone on here that's new and would love to build an AR but doesn't have all the tools, vice blocks, a torque wrench, etc.  Or maybe there's someone out there with a buzzbox and wants to zap a few AK receiver trunions or something?  Even if it's just as simple as putting together a lower receiver, everyone could show up somewhere with their parts and walk away with a rifle.  Even if you didn't have anything to build, you could show up with your tools and some beer and guide the new guys through the process.  If anyone has a horizontal mill, I have a set of 80% receiver jigs if someone wants to do that (though it does take a few hours, so probably not more than two people could do that).  I also have a nice spray gun setup and maybe someone wants to Duracoat/Cerakote a gun they already have?  Obviously, we'd have to give this one some lead time to let everyone buy their parts, so maybe it's more of a Winter event?  (note: If we want to do metal finishing, Duracoat goes on much better in warm weather.)

* Gun show road trip.  Everyone knows all the good shows are in PA and VA.  Maybe make a drive and pick up a few people along the way?

* Long range road trip.  For anyone with a precision rifle, we could make a pilgrimage to a 1000yd+ range?  You have to drive a few hours for any of them, and saving gas money means more cash for ammo.

* Epic dinner pic.  Get together at someone's house, smoke/grill up a bunch of meat, and stage some of the finest dinner pics ARFCOM's ever seen.  I can load the smoker up into the truck and have 30+ pounds of smoked pork anywhere in the state.  Maybe everyone pitch in and have a crab feast?

* Hunting/fishing trip.  Obviously it's not for everyone, but we might be able to do a group "kill it & grill it" or something like that.

Just thinking out loud here.

Long ago, someone offered up their home for a pool party.
But all of that was washed away like tears in the rain...

Did they mean like a regular pool party, or a GD-esque "pool party."
Because I can understand there being some trepidations regarding the latter.

Maybe the easiest thing to do is just get together for dinner & beers and we'll plan the next event then?

I offered up my pool and yard / house, my pool is 6 feet under, just filled it in, but I am still willing to have the riff-raff over, I'm in Reisterstown...Hap Baker (blah) is 15 minutes from the house...

I had no idea you had the jigs or the spray kit.  I don't have a mill, but my buddy does - in Havre disgrace.  I need to re-do a Kimber, but only have a pancake compresser.

I may be open to the idea of a cookout if it's OK with the wife - it will be, I just need to let her know a bunch of drunken, hungry gun-toting ARFCOMers will be parking on the lawn

I have what is needed to build a rifle if anyone would like to do that . . . .

Tits and beer - I'm past that stage.  I'm married, so T&B is right inside my door when I get home

Anyway, you can count me in for whatever as long as it fits my schedule.

Good ideas - I like the prize idea - cut cards, toss dice, best shooting . . .

My vote = house get together - epic grub, build tools available, prize of some kind . . . . and vote for next get together.  A range day would be my choice for get together #2, but when the weather is cooler.

I have a pretty large deck, tools to build and a Giraud trimmer, nice grill and room for beer in a cooler.  Trim blades for .223/6.8/.308

Bring that paint setup/smoker and we have a party!  I have a rifle that needs paint, straw/sponge combo.

Alright, I'm down with that.

I'll load up my smoker and compressor/sprayer.  Neither is anything fancy, but it works.
Shoot, maybe I'll grab my jockey box if someone wants to spring for a keg.  (Seriously, just a sixtel or a quarter/pony.  There are going to be what, 10 of us?  )
Now the draft box is actually a quality piece of gear.  I'm serious about my beer.

My jigs are on loan to my brother right now, but I can borrow them back for a while.

Also, you do realize that we'll need some time for the smoker.  Ribs and chicken take about 5 hours, brisket 8-10 after an overnight marinade, and pork butts 10-12.  We might want to go the ribs/chicken route, or I can smoke a butt the day before and just bring it by itself.  Yeah, that takes the fun out of drinking beers around a big smoke generator and smelling like delicious hickory so the wife yells at you when you get home, but then, there's also no waiting.  Cost is minimal if I can buy in bulk.  I can do half a rack of ribs plus half a chicken per person for about $5-7 ea.  Pork butt's cheaper, just a few bucks for all you can eat.  I'll just bring receipts and if anyone wants to chip in, that's fine, but I do need a rough head count ahead of time so we don't end up with a mountain of ribs (not that anyone would really complain).  Beer, I can do draft Yuengling for $60 for a pony keg (appx. 60 pints, so $1 per 16 oz. pour).  If anyone knows of a better store than my UMD college shop that sells kegs (and it shouldn't be hard to beat), I'm happy to defer.  The great thing about the jockey box is all we need is two bags of ice.  No tub-o-floating needed.

Now, I'm out of town next week on business, and family vacation is the last week of August.  So let's plan for Jul 23/24, Jul 30/31, Aug 6/7, Aug 13/14, or Aug 20/21.
Someone might want to check the gun shows and competition dates so we don't run into anything.  Anybody going to Perry is going to miss out on about half that, for example.

Oh, and BYO Duracoat.  I don't know what color you need or how much.
For reference, a 4oz. container will do one large gun with three coats or 2-3 pistols.  For me, it did a tomahawk head, a lower receiver, and an entire bicycle frame.
Midway has most colors in stock, and it's cheap (especially if you have the C&R discount like you should).
You can also coat pretty much anything with it, so if you guys need car parts, impact tools, sporting equipment, etc. coated, that's no sweat.  Just make sure it's clean and degreased (I use LectraClean, works very well, I'll bring what I have but buy a can or two for yourself at HD/Lowes).

TK is in the lead right now, though it's only a few votes either way.

I just went to my first Tilted Kilt tonight, in Green Bay, WI...

Meh.

Our waitress was a straight slut with stars tattooed over her nipples.  But that's beside the point.  The food is mediocre and the beer selection is shit.
I hope Baltimore is better if y'all are going to make me drive 75 minutes each way for it.

Anyhow, whether we do TK or MDS's house, how's Aug 6th sound for everyone?

The next weekend is the state champtionship high power match, and the weekend after that is the Annapolis gun show.  So the 6th kinda splits the schedule there.

Of the two choices, I vote MDS's house if he (and the wife) are still up for it.  TK seems likely to disappoint.

Anyone else?

6th works for me - I was waiting for a hard date to check with the wife - I'm sure it's not a problem.  Sorry men, TK and skin bars are out for me - they hold no attraction.  I spent lots of time and money there as a younger man.

Reloaders bring your brass - Giraud trimmer can do 1000 an hour - but have a beer and just do 500  Blades for .223/6.8 and .308 available.

Have a sit-ton of brass a differnt size - get a trimmer blade from Giraud for $30 delivered and just use my machine.

I have tools to build rifles - lowers, uppers, whatever.

Now - TM - about that smoker

Back deck is 75' long - so plenty of room, decent grill . . .

I'll fly the BFL flag and we can park on the lawn.

Wanna have some real fun - we can give a 21 gun salute to [whomever] as I have blanks.  That will terrorize the neighbors and bring the PoPo

I just trimmed all my .223 brass I had on hand.  About 350 pieces on an RCBS trim-pro.  Without the 3-way cutter.  Trim, chamfer, and deburr by hand.  Took all damn day.

Maybe I'll stop at the range and empty the brass bucket.  I'll still have to tumble and resize/decap it, but at least I'll have it.  We'll see if I get the time.

Smoker is GTG.  Just be aware, the firebox does get hot.  So, wood deck and all, you might want to have a piece of plywood or something to catch any embers.  I have a stone patio so I don't care, but you might want to have something available if you want to run the smoker on the deck.

What are we thinking?  Just ribs and chicken?  That's a 5-hour burn, so not too bad.

Everyone bring your Dillo Dust, I only have about half of one thing left.

Bubbles offered to bring a couple MGs, and it is the 6th of Aug, we could go all Hiroshima on the neighbor. See how he likes that.

ETA- MD Laws suck:

Just a hitch - the 6th might be no good for me if the Navy decides to ask me to come in that day.  Evening would be fine, but I probably couldn't get there until 7-8PM, which puts running the smoker right out.

So we can:
* Keep Aug6th and find something else to cook
* Keep Aug6th and someone else can pick up my smoker and run it
* Move to Aug7th.  I know it's Sunday, but it's not football season yet, so...

And I'm not 100% positive I'll have to report yet, but knowing how these things go, I figured I'd give y'all a heads up.

So, no more discussion?

I talked with M_S this week, and it looks like we need to move to the 13th.

I have Navy drill on the 6th, and Sundays are bad for most people.  So let's plan to get together on the 13th for a barbecue, beer, and gun-building party.

Post here if you can make it, and whether you're bringing anybody else.  Just so I can get a rough head count of how much chicken and ribs I'll need to smoke.  Figure $5/person for food if you'd like to contribute.  But I need to know ahead of time how many I'm cooking for so I can hit Costco.

Also, do we want to pick up a pony keg of beer, or just everyone bring a six pack or two and we'll go potluck?  I have portable, CO2 push, ultra-cold draft equipment, so it's no sweat for me either way.
