I tried to do a search, but wasn't able to find anything. I am looking for firsthand information on how the process works. I have heard that you have to be on a first name basis with God to get it, but I would like first hand info. TIA!

Here is a link to the MSP application-  http://www.mdsp.org/Downloads/Licensing_Application.pdf

The process is really simple. You apply and they turn you down. In MD you have to show a need that is supported by written documintation. It sucks.

You need to show you deposit large amounts of cash from your business, or that,
say, you are a pharmaceutical Rep who carries drugs in his vehicle and
need to stop Rush Limbaugh from stealing your Oxy.  Of course, you are
restricted from carrying when not transporting money or carrying drugs, et. al.

It would help if you were high up in the MD democratic party.  Donating large amounts of money to O'malley's re-election committee can also help expedite the process.

I recall one guy tried to get a CCW, personal defense the reason, and the MSP not only denied him, but put in his records that he must be mentally ill for even wanting a CCW.

Read reports about others who have tried to get an MD permit (all failed).  Case in point:  friend's former father-in-law was a Montgomery police offiver for over 20 years.  Applied for a permit WHILE still on the force.  STILL took the state over one year (6 months AFTER he retired) to grant the permit.

Of course, he could still apply for a Federal permit under S.218 & carry legally w/o MD's permission if he could qualify.

Regular civilians? No chance.

I have several MD permits, but its due to the nature of the MANY jobs I have, and threats I have received as well. In MD you get a different permit for each job you have, they dont condense the restrictions for each of your different jobs on one permit, you get multiples.

Even with threats its extremely difficult to get one. Fortunately for me I do work for an attorney that takes care of my applications.

People who don't have Issues if you have a clean record:

Doctors (M.D.)
Dentists
Vets
Attorney
Pharmacists/Rx Reps
Jury Member/Witness to a highly volatile criminal case
Diplomats and Personnel
Business Owners (Must show random cash deposits) (Restrictions, ON DUTY ONLY)
Authorized Employees of Businesses (Must show random cash deposits) (Restrictions, ON DUTY ONLY)
Private Security/Armored Car Messengers (Restrictions, ON DUTY ONLY)
Certain People with HIGH Clearances and Access to Sensitive Areas/Data
Retired Maryland L.E.O
Current Maryland L.E.O

Unless you meet any of the above conditions then don't bother to send an application. They keep your money if you are denied. If you have DOCUMENTED threats then you will have to get an attorney or there is still little chance you will get a permit.

If you've got the money to chance it, you should go ahead and apply.   The word "no" doesn't cost you anything other than the fee and your time, but in the future....pending a favorable outcome on the recent 7th circuit ruling.....it may give us a class of people to file a lawsuit.

There were between 11000-12000 active permits as of 2004, which means that >someone< is getting approved.  Mostly it's those working for the government in a security fashion or for the judiciary(about 38%), but around 31% are approved for those dealing in cash business.  If you apply on the basis of self-defense, it is likely to be denied, but it will give you standing to be part of the class action when the lawsuit comes.

Good advice! THere is strength in numbers.

Think about this:

MD's Projected 2010 population is about  6 million people according to the census.  There are only 12,000 active permits.

VA's  projected 2010 population is about  8 million people according to the census.  We have over 152,000+ active permits.

I found the population data here:

http://www.census.gov/population/www/projections/statepyramid.html

CCW permit holder data for VA comes from a Wash Post article about 1.5 years ago.  VA permits have skyrocketed since then.

Clandestine,

Can you elaborate on the security clearance condition, please?  Have you known people that have been issued a permit based on a clearance?

Thanks!

Sure,

I do know 2 people with clearance that have Maryland Permits.

I dont know "what they do" for the government but they did give me a summary. Bacically if you carry Laptops, or Hard Drives with Classified Info and/or accesses, Classified Materials, Bioligical or Nuclear Material, or have Weapons Program Knowledge. Then you could qualify.

These 2 gentleman I know are slightly wealthy, and had an attorney prepare the application for them, so that may have been a factor as well.

I believe the reason they couldnt deny them was based on the "value" of the info/materials these people had knowledge or access/control of.

That dosent sound very clear so If you need me to clarify please let me know.

I work with a few ex-correctional officers. They have all said that if you have 3 documented (meaning the police filed a report) threats against your life in the previous year then you can apply and get a concealed carry permit. This is pretty easy for them since the inmates threaten them often enough and the correctional facility files thier own reports on the matter. I would also assume that correctional officers may also recieve favoritism since the police and correction fields are intertwined and they often work together. However, when it expires they have to again show documented threats to renew the permit, so retired and ex-corrections may probably can't get them. I have also heard that victims of rape can apply and recieve concealed carry permits in MD. The info about corrections is third hand information and the rape victim thing is pure rumor, so take it for what it's worth.

You're actually pretty on for the most part.  I know first hand of an ex-CO who had to go to court and spend a ton of legal fees to get his permit.

Some domestic violence victims do get permits, but it's actually a very low number.  There was a bill this year that MSI supported that would let domestic violence victims, who are plaintiffs in a protective order case, to advance to the head of the line and get their permit.  It was done to tag along on the gun grabbing bills sponsored by the Governor.  Unfortunately, our general assembly doesn't see their hypocrisy.
