A Moline man has been charged with aggravated reckless discharge of a firearm in connection with a shooting Monday that wounded his 10-year-old son.

Moline police Lt. John Hitchcock said in a press release than an arrest warrant has been issued for Allen Vanmeenen, 51, in Rock Island County Circuit Court. According to a Rock Island County Jail officer, Mr. Vanmeenen was not in custody Tuesday afternoon.

Police were called to apartment 32 at Deer View Apartments, 4109 38th Ave., about 2:05 p.m. Monday. Lt. Hitchcock said police learned that a 10-year-old boy, later identified as Mr. Vanmeenen's son, had been shot in the face with a .22 caliber rifle.

The boy was taken to Genesis Medical Center Illini Campus in Silvis for treatment and later released.

Lt. Hitchcock said an investigation revealed that Mr. Vanmeenen had been "manipulating" the rifle in the apartment when it went off and a bullet struck the boy in the right side of his face.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the criminal investigation division of the Moline Police Department at (309) 524-2140.

RULE #1 NEVER POINT A GUN AT ANYTHING YOU DON'T WANT TO DESTROY.  YES THAT INCLUDES YOUR 10 YEAR OLD KID DIP-SHIT.

I am very disappointed by this posting...
This will be used by the media to vilify us all...

My son loves NERF guns and all that stuff... but he it totally afraid of my real guns.
I have shown him the respect of not forcing him to touch or hold them till he is ready to do so.
He understands that they are WEAPONS and NOT TOYS!  He is 9 now and since he was about 5 or 6 he has had ZERO interest in my guns.
When he is ready I have a single shot youth .22 that he and I will refinish and re-blue as a project.  And he will learn fire arm safety from ME.

I will never "manipulate" a firearm without FIRST dropping a mag and clearing a chamber!
Ammo and firearms should never be in the same area unless you are loading mags for the range and the firearms and made safe!

I had a friend of mine named Tony that was shot by his brother in law right before a trip to the range with his own glock 9mm.
Tony survived and his brother in law cleared as it was witnessed by three or four other people that were right there at the time and stated that it was an accident!
What kind of ACCIDENT was it?  HE THOUGHT IT WAS UNLOADED!!!!
Tony shot went thru his right side abdomen and up into his right lung thru the diaphragm and exited in-between his right ribs... and then falling into a pocket of a jacket on the wall where he was standing.
The Local police and the FEDS showed up while he was being placed into the ambulance... (Back Story: his family had a slight history of some shady business dealing with some known criminals)
They got him to surrender his safe codes and ALL his firearms were tagged and bagged for EVIDENCE?!?!?!?
While he was in the hospital dealing with his wounds he got an infection and lost a shit load of weight and was on a few IV's.
He was frequently asked questions about his HOARD of fire arms... (HIS WORDS) and told them he likes to collect a lot of different guns!
When the FEDS got done with the investigation they found one DE .50 that was hot from Indiana.  When confronted with this in the hospital he called his sister and asked her to find his recite to the purchase from and Indiana dealer and give it to the FED coming to the house to get it.  The dealer did not know it was on a list and Tony was refunded his money from the dealer and HE had to deal with the FEDS on that one.
In the end all his guns were returned except the glock.  He had to get a lawyer to get that one back.  When he did he found that the FEDS inscribed his case number on the barrel and inside his frame!

Moral to the story… EVERY GUN IS ALWAYS LOADED!!!!
