I posted this in the AK forum before I thought and posted it here... Let me know if any of you guys are interested or have any pointers please.

I tried a search and couldn't find anything related to this, so here it goes.

I have recently decided that I would like to build my own AK. Is there anyone in MO (I am personally located here in Springfield) that would be interested in helping me out? I am a college student, so needless to say, I don't have any of the major metal working tools or I would try to do it on my own... That and the fact that it would be a hell of a lot safer having someone who knows whats going on make sure I don't happen to botch something up that's going to blow my face off when I decide to shoot it.

Thanks.

I'd like to be in on a build party just to get some pointers. I have 2 parts kits and some of the tools, but not much of a place to do it. Plus I'm not the type to hurry and get something like that done in just a few hours; I'm a measure thrice, cut twice kind of guy.

So yeah, I'm in. But I just wanna watch, for now.

I'm not interested in hosting a build party (3 jobs, too many current projects, and a small garage keep me from this) but if you need some pointers I'd be willing to help. What kind of kits do you have? Do they have original barrels or did they come with cut barrels? Are you wanting traditional AKs or something different ? Also are you wanting to build off a flat or a prebent receiver?

When I get Moved into my new house and get my shop setup again I may be willing to host a build party.
It will be more like an instruction class on how to properly assemble an AK.

The previous 2 posters may know a thing or three about building functioning AKs.

That's what I'm looking for. I know how they go together. I'm just looking for someone with experience that can share some of the finer points with me.

Tools that are not modifications of existing half assed tools is a good place to start.
Are you wanting to "Roll your Own" as it were or use a good receiver like NDS?
Rivets? One of the best suppliers of rivets is right here in the greater KC Area...

Anyway, I have barrel press kits, (have to get a new press as mine was STOLEN)
Blast Cabinet
I can park but that costs money and I couldn't do it for free. Fuel for the burners, Chemistry etc... not FREE or CHEAP.
There will be vises and Hand Tools Drill motors and drill presses.
Grinders and jigs and such.
It will be about two months or so before I will be ready to go.

If you need any help getting things setup you let me know, because I would be more than happy to help. (Building an AK is on my bucket list sadly enough)

Here is my most recent build (top). Just got the Form 1 back last week. It's not done yet though. I'm testing out the optic, light and muzzle device until I find a set up that works best for me. Then I will refinish the entire gun.

I have a couple of home made rivet jigs. I'll probably buy another jig for the long rivets. I have a NDS-2 EZ receiver and AK builder rivets.

I'll probably take on the parking on my own. I'm not opposed to buying more tools, as I have multiple kits waiting to be built.

Always appreciative of any help that you can give!

I would like to come out and actually build, though I don't have much experience.  I would really like to build a pistol that would be set up to later convert to an SBR.  Since I'm new to the whole building thing, if anyone could either post in the thread or IM/email me about what I would need to do a pistol build that would be very helpful!

There are several ways to go about a pistol build. The easy ways are to go with a short AK kit. These would be your M92, AMD-65, or theakbuilder sales a pistol kit.
M92
Or you could get a full length AK and chop it down to make something a little different.
Romy G slightly modified

In all reality buying a Draco pistol would be your best bet and come it way cheaper than building one unless you already have the parts. Buy one with an underfolder rear trunnion and it would be a simple job to add an underfolding stock.

I have all the Jigs and tooling necessary to a good build. My Long Rivet Jig is a custom piece and built like a tank!
I use Aviation Rivet Squeezers for the front rivets.

I just picked up a 12 ton press on Friday. It's a harbor freight cheapie, but it seems like most people wind up using something similar anyways. If we come up with a date I can get the frame put together and throw it in the back of my truck then install the jack and springs where ever we decide to meet up.

I guess a little more info would be helpful.  I was wanting to have about a 9" barrel and use a romanian wire sidefolder.  I first was going to get a draco to SBR but the prices have gotten high on those, 450 for a regular and over 500  for a mini.  Also, if I'm not mistaken, if I'm going with a sidefolder, then I would need to chop the back of the receiver and add a tang anyway so I figured I would just start with a receiver that has a tang to start with.  Also, I don't really want to have to include a buffer in the gun I end with.

I hope this can help you point me in the right direction.  And thank you for the help!!   Also I'm in the STL area.

It is WAY easier to do than all that.
Get a TANG rear block (it ain't a trunnion) and cut the TANG off or don 't it won't matter...
Build as you wish attach the sling with the tang, then when you get your Form 1 back install the side folding Romy... Easy!

If I used a mini, what would I do with the buffer?  Cuz I don't want that.  And the regular draco is too long for my tastes.

The buffer on the mini is used since the gas piston is to short to function reliably without it. The only way to go without it and have a reliable gun is to install a guide rod system. I would avoid this.
What turns you off about the Draco? It's much more of a practical length than the Mini. With a Mini you get 7.25" of barrel on a 7.62x39mm gun if you go with a slant brake or muzzle nut expect a massive fireball. If thats what your going for then you will probably want the Mini.
I've been very tempted to build a SBR Draco with the stock you are planning to use. I think it's this picture that gives me the fever. AIM Carbine action

Honestly, this is gonna be a fun gun mainly.  I kinda want it to have the shorter barrel for the huge fireball.  And the lost velocity is not that big, so I don't really feel the need for the longer barrel.
