I wonder if I'll be the first to post this year

My family is not from here.  I don't have deep ancestry here.  My mother is a Mexican immigrant, and my father a German immigrant.  They found Texas and settled here.  They got married, and had two wonderful kids.  And so, another Native Texan family was begun.  I am a First Generation Texan.  I don't have familial ties to any of the historical events that shaped this Great State.  Yet I am filled with pride at the defiance the Texans showed leading up to the Battle of Gonzales.  I still well up with tears when I think of the slaughter at Goliad, and the brave men that died heroically defending The Alamo.  Then I think of the Battle of San Jacinto, where appx. 900 Texans overran a force of appx. 1300 Mexicans.  In that 18 minute battle, the Texans also remembered Goliad, and remembered The Alamo.  According to General Sam Houston's official report:  630 Mexicans killed, 208 wounded, 730 taken prisoner.  Texans losses:  9 dead, 30 wounded.  On that afternoon of April 21, 1836, the battle for Texas was won.

Now I've gotten married (to a wonderful Texas girl), and had two wonderful little Texas girls of my own. They'll grow up (God willing) with the same pride for their State that their Daddy has.  They'll learn Texas History in school, but from me as well (just in case that damn school system tries to rewrite history).

Am I a proud Texan?  You bet your sweet ass I am.

Happy Texas Independence day, y'all.

Yes! Finally someone who knows!!!

I'm about 4th or 5th gen too!

I tend to remember 4/21 as San Jacinto day since I'm close to Pasadena where the Yellow Rose entertained Santa Anna whilst our Texicans set up to charge.

On this note, anyone going to see the newest "Alamo" film?

Alamo opens in the next town over Friday. I think we are going to check it out but I'm afraid of what Hollyweird has done to the story. Guess we'll see.

Yes I'll raise a glass of Shiner Bock to this great state today.
