I had my router go out and now the new one doesn't see the internet. Anyone here who can help me? It's a VoiP DLink router and I set it up through vonage but since it doesn't see the internet I can do ... well... anything. If I plug the modem straight into the computer I get a connection no problem which is how I'm here asking for help. |

I think you have a 'settings' problem.
But seriously, to use my DSL modem and router to connect multiple PCs for interent access I had to tweak the settings in the router to make it pretend to be a PC(or the only thing on the modem). It has been a while since I did mine but I googled the model of my router and my ISP and one of the first pages had the fix. Maybe this will help. Not sitting in front of it to work out the issues is sorta hard. ByteTheBullet (-: |

I'm not a computer genius but it sounds like a problem I had with my modem/router a few years ago.
When you connect your PC to the modem directly, do you need to setup an internet connection to get the internet working? If not, then your modem is loging into the net and acting like a wired router. This will cause problems if you connect your router to the modem. I had to change a setting on my modem to "bridge" it in order to get the router to work. |
| I'm guessing you have Comcast as a provider if you are getting that behavior (and probably a Motorola Surfboard). Hook the router up to the cable modem, remove power from both the cable modem and the router, power up the cable modem, then the router. Let me know! |

Set your router to obtain DHCP from the modem, plug the modem into the WAN port on your router and plug your computer into the LAN port in the router. Some times I have to hard reset both devices before they want to communicate this happens every time when the modem is from Comcast. After all of the settings are changed unplug power from the router and the modem, count to 15 and then plug the modem power back in. Wait until the unit is completely up (if it is att/bellsouth the DSL light will be on if it is Comcast the status light will be on) then plug the power back into your Dlink router. Go to the routers web setup and go to the status page and you should see that the router has obtained an address from the modem, you should be able to launch the internet at this point and if not there may be a DNS config tweek that needs to be done. I handle all kinds of this stuff for my job and we only deal with small businesses 1-30 computers. Let me know if you have any questions, I emailed you as well.

It depends on what internet service you have
If it is ATT/Bellsouth, the Modem needs to be put into Bridged mode, and in the router Select PPPoe - and enter your username and password in the router. If its a Cable modem then the router should be set to auto DHCP. |

IF you have ATT/Bellsouth and if you only want to use the router to share the internet to multiple computers than you can simply set the router for DHCP**EDIT(Make sure you change the LAN IP range to x.x.Different.x than the modem gives)**. If you want to use any of the routing functions, port fowarding for example, then you need to set it in bridge mode and set the router for PPPoe and enter your user/pass. |
