The FBI just released the NICS numbers for June.
http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/nics Estimating 2012 numbers at 2-X the YTD, here is a plot of total US NICS checks since it started in 1998.

I spent some time this morning playing with the numbers:
Total US NICS Checks (November 1998 to June 2012): 149,783,713 Source: http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/nics/reports/070512_1998_2012_monthly_yearly_totals.pdf Estimated cost to Law-Abiding Citizens (assuming $15 ea.): nearly $2.25B Total US Denials (November 1998 to June 2012): 940,058 Source: http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/nics/reports/070512_denials.pdf % Denial/Check: less than 0.63% (approximately 6 in every 1,000 checks) Cost to Law-Abiding Citizens per Denial: nearly $2,400 per Denial. Over the past nearly 14 years it actually kept nearly 1MM prohibited persons from acquiring a firearm, plus who knows how many more passively as a deterrent. Is that worth $2.25B? |

Quoted:
Estimated cost to Law-Abiding Citizens (assuming $15 ea.): nearly $2.25B Bad assumption... NJ charges $15 ($16.05 with tax), because it acts as the POC (point of contact) for NICS. The majority of other states use the FBI NICS directly, which is at no additional cost. See here for the breakdown: http://www.atf.gov/firearms/brady-law/state-lists.html |

So, any thoughts on what might have caused the market upswing in 2004/05 that is accelerating to this day? My bet would be on the UN Treaty. Wasn't it around 2004 when it first became general knowledge? The AWB ended in '04... people could buy ARs and AKs again. |

Quoted:
Not only does Delaware NOT charge for its NICS check, there's NO SALES TAX So the price on the tag is your price out the door! (Long guns only, I'm afraid) You are still required to pay your NJ Sales tax, even on out-of-state purchases.
I am sure that we are all good citizens of the Republik and surely none of us would never do something like avoiding our obligations to the treasury for the Commonwealth. |
