I may be moving to Wisconsin later this year. I have a KY CCDW and am a former instructor. I was wondering if someone could give me a quick rundown on gunlaws in Wisconsin. No CCDW, right? "assault weapon" laws? Class III firearm approvals? Thanks. |

![]() I've found just the opposite. People are much friendlier here than they were when I was down south. Granted, I still live in the "good" part of the state, and don't live in the big city. YMMV of course |
All us city assholes are assholes..... ![]() (Actually compared to the East coast I find Wisconsinites very nice ( Of course I avoid Milwaukee and Madtown like the plague, And in the name of Honesty Green NBay is more of a really big town then a small city) Where you looking to move? |
DING DING DING We have a winner! |

In the smaller towns, you should be fine. One of the problems lately, however, is that idiots are ruining the big cities and then moving out of them, and then trying to implement the same damn stuff in the small towns that ruined the bigger cities. If you can, stay away from the bigger cities. BTW, one of the problems in Green Bay is that some years ago they found that the welfare people didn't have enough to do. Rather than cut back on budget and staff, they went down to Chicago and advertised that they had plenty of welfare money, "So c'mon up to GB." |
There's a bunch of errors in most of the NFA guides I've seen when it comes to WI. It's understandable, as some of the statutes must have been written by a monkey while trying to copulate with a football bat. Just sayin'. |

Thanks for all the feedback. I was born in SC, high school in North Chicago, and have lived in central KY for 20 years. I am aware of the different attitudes etc. I agree that generally, people down here tend to be more polite and open. But everybody I have met around the area (Stephens Point area) has been really nice. With one very notable exception. I was riding my ATV on my sisters property (which she just bought, 25 acres surrounded by Dept of Forrest land, and adjoining another farm). There was snow on the ground, and in a very large field, I met a guy pulling a haywagon with kids on the back. I waved, said hello, introduced myself. His response was a totally rude (to the point that if the kids had not been there, I would have had words with him), a TOTAL ASSWIPE! His response to me was, "I own this property, and you are trespassing and I'd appreciate it if you leave." Pretty rude reply. But the way he said it, and the face he made was unreal. The kids seemed embarrassed and none said a word. I said "I apologize for the intrusion, what was your name? OK, take care.." I left. Turns out the guy didn't even own the land but hunted on it and was a self-appointed custodian for the owner. After speaking to the land owner, he told the guy to mind his own business, and for us not to worry about it. Her 25 acres adjoins their 100 acres on one side, there is a trout stream running through both, and both are surrounded by State forest and paper mill land. Beautiful up there!!! We are getting our house in KY ready to rent out. Hope to be up there before Xmas. But noi rush.. I dread the move... Thanks again and take care all! And BTW a destructive device I believe is anything that explodes such as a grenade, mortar or exploding projectile in excess of 20mm...??? |
Over .50 inches without a "sporting purpose". So if one had say.... A Lahti 20MM even though it does not shoot exploding rounds, It is still a DD. |
I agree with this sentiment. So, are pistol caliber machine guns legal, or not? Because I can't make heads or tales of that little snippet. |
My take (seemingly along with the BATFE, since they register pistol cal MGs to corps and trusts in the state) is that they're fine. No special permit or permission from the local chief required. ETA: A literal reading of the statute would only require the permission slip for rifle MGs, converted to pistol caliber, for the express purpose of firing non-lethal munitions. We know that wasn't the intent, but that's how it reads. ![]() The SBR/SBS/AOW/Silencer statute is much more clear. |
