I was perusing my local suppliers wares today and he has a pile of RORG 5.56mm BALL. I take it that means Royal Ordnance Radway Green, but what will the bullet weight be? |
|
Is there a date stamp on it. It depends on the spec, but current Brit mil spec will ber stamped L17A1,L17A2, L15A2 or L2A2 etc Everything pre /94 was stamped RORD, but I have had newer stuff with that stamp too, but that came in a green can as opposed to the normal brown |
Fixed it for yer |
It was late and I was doing the old typing and not looking routine
|
Thought as much RG / RORG / Contract 62gr FMJ you may encounter on the UK surplus market: L2A1 - L2A2 - L15A1 - L17A1 - L17A2 - L21A1 - The different numbers are pretty much irrelevant in their meaning to civy shooters, they will all be around 900m/s for a 62gr FMJ ss109 projectile out of a 20' AR. Different batches will differ in the ease of extraction from your rifle, so if you get the chance, buy a small amount of any LOT number to try, before a major purchase! |
Or an AR..
|
Actually that's a glass |
|
I like being an amateur, means I can ask all sorts of stupid questions and no-one is surprised....................... |
white boxes of 20 are civi, brown boxes of 30 are mil issue (normaly for training combat issue should be in bandoliers and on stripper clips) Nick |
...and still no bipod.. |
I zero'd my rifle using 62grn milsurp Rg. got it near enough spot on. Then tried 20 rounds of Norinco 55grn, they shot perfectly ok, but just grouped 2" higher. For CSR / ETR out to 300, either would be ok providing it's a nice day!! I may use the Norinco for ETR and keep the RG for CSR. This is out of a 14.5" M4 by the way. Don't know what the twist is, never thought to ask SF the question. Mark? |
I've not tried it yet. No stripper clips. They are on order with SF and I'm hoping to pick them up with a few other bits off him at the CSR match this month (if I can make it) Thanks again by the way. |
You owe me for that, Pepsi all over the place, blimey a copper with a sense of humour. Tony |
The stuff on bandoliers and stripper clips we have is 1:4 tracer... |
Quite right but the stuff in cartons is ball. |
COUGH !!!

now there is a patern forming here when I was a young troop and even more prone to mistakes I was sent to collect 100 thousand rounds of blank. it was thursday and I was in a hurry to get the job done and get back and get on the beer with my team mates. so I turn up at the bunker at the depot and the stores bloke points to a big pile of boxes and says thats your lot. I load them on my truck with the speed of a thousand gazelles and sign the sheet and hit the road getting back from the job just in time to stack them up in an office and get on the beer. now this shouldn't have been a problem well what could go wrong? ![]() well I didn't read the side of the boxes did I and took the stores bloke at his word. no one ever told me blank came in wooden cases and these were most definately painted brown steel and not full of blank but were full of bandoliers of ball and tracer. much mickey taking ensued the only saving grace was I didn't have to take them back as a very panicky stores bloke came to exchange them. oh well!!! Almost as bad as bein told to line up along the treeline and empty all none expended blank ammo into the woods..... That was in the US before I am flamed... Apparently it was easier to either fire it off or get a "back hoe" and bury it rather than complete the paperwork to sign it back in.....
|
I think you'll find it might have happened once or twice in other countries. Not only has that a routine occurance with blank but getting rid of pyro has also happened as if it's not used the unit won't get as much next year - a tragic cycle of hoarding and waste... The flip side is when there's not enough to go round - a friend of my brother's mate's dad's sister's boyfriend's cousin claimed to have seen a three hour battlegroup attack in the 80s with all of about 100 rds of blank fired... the CO was fuming and the RSM was planning a public hanging for the RQ. |
Another similar story: My dad took part in the attack mentioned HERE. the only reason that the rocket was fired was that they didn't have anything else! Apparently they had minimal 7.62 between them, and if there had been a real fight they'd have had to withdraw... |
I've heard a similar story from as recently as a couple of years back. Apparently when a regiment was pulling out of Afghanistan, it wasn't worth the paperwork of taking the ammo back with them, so they litterally fired about 100,000rds into a mountain, only pausing occasionally to let the barrels cool down. And apparently all the empties were collected by the local children before they even had chance to get cold!!! |
That used to happen all the time, we always used to waste any blank left over. On exersize in Germany once we blew over 1000 rds of blank. and also I saw 800 rds 7.62 link fired straight in the sand at Altcar to 'get rid'. As formentioned, use it or lose it. |
You could try York Guns, but dont hold yer' breath. If you can find some you can have it mailed from RFD to RFD if you are in with you local gun dealer. They usually levy a small fee, so find out first |
