So we might be moving to Dallas for a job opportunity, but other than visiting for a Cowboys game I don't really know much about the area.  Lived in San Antonio for a long time and like the whole Big Little City feel of it but sometimes you cannot say no.

Ill need to commute to The area around Southwestern Hospital, so was wondering about neighborhoods near there that have EXCELLENT schools (elementary/middle school for now).  Also looking for any San Antonians that transplanted to Dallas to get their opinions.

Places to shoot?  Is there an established CERT community?

Thanks in advance!

Dallas is deffinatley not the "big little city" that SA is, thats more akin to Fort Worth. All I can say is prepare to leave very early to work as the traffic is the big D can get unbearable. The persona is difficult to pin, its more about being "modern" vs "historical". It is also the only county that went blue up here...if that matters anything to you. If you like living in the "big city" and enjoy the downtown or suburban experience...Dallas could be for you.

You mean UT Southwest?

You're gonna pay for it if you want to live close and live somewhere nice. What's your $ situation?

Probably find something under a million in the University Park Highland Park area and have good schools and be close to work with little traffic. North Dallas has some nice homes, but DISD schools which are hit and miss.

You can go up the North Dallas Tollway into Plano, Frisco, probably get a nice house around $300K, but I haven't looked at houses over there in a while.

Someone here might be able to comment on Carrolton/Farmers Branch.

You can go east and go cheaper, but traffic sucks.

Can't be any worse than Seagoville. I keep seeing fat, big titty girls without shoes hanging around the Walmart.

I'll be working a UT Southwestern, we are currently in a 5-Bedroom 3.5 bath approx 3300 sqft home around 275k appraisal.  Not looking to overextend myself housewise but also not wanting to take a huge step backwards or to buy into a dying neighborhood.  No barefooted people please!

Trying to keep A 30 minute or less commute time if at all possible but the million dollar house is not doable.  Thanks for the advise, keep it coming!

Just get a smaller house close to work and buy some land out in the country and set up a private range just for us guys around here.

If you have the means, you might consider a private school for the kids, as, the DISD is ridiculously mismanaged, as is the city government. Taxes are cheaper in the burbs, but if you are really thinking of being in Dallas, you would be wise to consider North Oak Cliff.

It's like it's own city, literally 5 min from downtown, about a 10-15 min drive to UT SW MC in normal crosstown traffic (no freeway driving), and a hell of an easy commute (just get on Inwood which is right next to the hospital, which then turns into Hampton, which goes right into N.OC.). There's affordable housing, an extremely diverse populace, lots of great food, etc,. Most of the homes in OC are older, established houses, not the eye-sore McMansions which have started an overrun of East Dallas/Lakewood.

People are going to dog-cuss OC regarding crime and all that, but it's really not as bad as people make it out to be.

Just something to consider, good luck to you. If you need more info, just IM me, am happy to help.

$300k will get you a damn nice house in Frisco.

I live inside the 635 loop in Dallas and I would not move North of 635 if you want a quick commute. There are some decent houses and great schools in University Park and even North Oak Cliff. Highland Park is going to be too expensive. West Dallas has some good finds, but I don't know anything about the schools.
There are some good CERT Teams in Dallas. I can put you in touch with the guys at City Hall if you are interested. I am in an East Dallas CERT team that is not very active, but I do a bunch of CT training with the local transit authority and Dallas Police and Fire Rescue. CERT volunteers are very likely going to be used during the 2012 Superbowl if you are interested in that sort of thing.

Dallas is expanding its Area Rapid Transit system, so you could potentially live further out and commute to the area around UT Southwestern Hospital via DART.

That entire UT Southwestern Medical District is up and coming and the place to be for high-tech innovative medical research.  Are you moving up here as part of the Dallas Plan or the newer ForwardDallas! initiative?

teknofear, don't you mean oak cliff oh?
yes, oak cliff is beautiful; and was the birthplace of the Vaughn(sp?) brothers(sorry austin)!
lots of people put their kids in private school/homeschool if they are not going to be permanent.
however, an area could change for the better or worse. for example, knox/henderson had the worst midlle school in disd but the yuppies&dinks ate it up so fast they displaced all the mexicans, many of them second of third generation. my buddy has a house there. he moved north for better schools and rented the barrio house when he couldn't sell it. the uptown plano neighborhood he moved into wents tits up(HUD)and last i heard he was going back to the barrio where people took care of business!
OP-if your going to be temporary in town( 2-5 years)i have a house in the bubble(up). maybe we should talk.

XDMikey, yes, Oak Cliff=OC.

And yes, I agree, lots of real estate development has regentrified East Dallas, they were trying to do that same shit to North Oak Cliff (my hood), but that effort came to a screeching halt when the group (INCAP) went belly up when they couldn't get the TIF dollars. Or so I've come to understand.
