Wife & I are thinking about moving to the Steelville area, out of town.
Wife is a nurse & IF we move I'll be retiring so not worried about a job.
Lived in Illinois all of our lives, so a change for the better is anticipated.

Anyone with any info on the area?
It would be appreciated.

If you can stay out of the summer drunken float trip crowds it is a beautiful area!

If you get caught in one of those drunken float trip crowds.....I might be there.

If you are looking for rural you are gonna find it there. People friendly but like most small towns clickish. Wife may have to commute to a job maybe 30 miles tops. No kids at home?

Near Potosi, Salem, St Jmaes and Rolla.   There are nursinghomes in that direction, hospital is salem or rolla.

Id considder the area poor, but tourism is its only real lifeblood.  If you can get land then hell yes, go for it.  Maybe considder St James if you need to be near more medical/interstate.  Still small town feel, perks of more accessability.

If she can do tele health, then Id say it doesnt matter.

Its a damned pretty area.

I'm 67 & mama is 64.
Kids grown & have their own kids
No problem with floaters.
Just want to kick back & enjoy the days I have left, and maybe do a little floating too meet new people & have some fun.
Trying to talk mama into retiring, but she doesn't want to

I've never lived in/near Steelville, but have visited many times. Lots of cool things happening in and around Steelville. There seems to be a lot of community pride and there's a lot going on "downtown" with a few interesting businesses popping up to serve the tourists.  A couple of my favorites:

Wildwood Springs Lodge -- the grand old lady was built in about 1920 and was stood dormant for about 20 years in the 1970s and '80s until a local businessman reopened it. They hold a series of concerts in the hotel lobby every fall. The place seats about 200 people and you'll never see a more intimate concert. Over the past 10 years or so, I've seen Dave Mason, Poco, Brewer & Shipley, the Marshall Tucker Band, the Little River Band, Arlo Guthrie, and a few others that I can't recall. Always a great time and the food there is wonderful. Funky rooms but just a great place otherwise. (Bob Bell, the owner, is one of the big reasons that so much is happening in Steelville. Also, you've got to meet Miss Paula, who oversees the dining hall staff, does their social media and also operates the ice cream parlor downtown . . . just a beautiful person in every way.) http://www.wildwoodspringslodge.com/

Meramec Springs Park -- Although this is one of the four official state trout parks is not actually a state park but a privately held preserve  -- Sort of a strange arrangement here but a wonderful place. It has great fishing and just a really cool place with a lot of history and one of the largest springs in the state.

Peaceful Bend winery -- Missouri has a lot of good wineries (the Herman and August area most notably -- and they're less than an hour away) but this little winery outside of Steelville is extra cool. The couple that owns it are really nice and they hold some cool special events.

Recreational opportunities abound all around the Steelville area. Within an hour's drive there more to do with a fishing rod, rifle, etc. than almost any other isolated area in Missouri. There is just so much to see or do nearby. Several float streams flow right near Steelville and the others are just an hour or so away. Located at the northern edge of the most rugged/beautiful part of Missouri's Ozarks, there's great hiking, camping, exploring in the area. Trail rides and bluegrass jams all over the place on a regular basis. Rolla, a university town in just 20-30 minutes to the west, and just beyond that is Fort Leonard Wood. An hour or so north you've got the state capital and the winery districts. Steelville is also only about 10 miles from Interstate 44 so it's a quick hop into St. Louis or Springfield if you need big city stuff. Really an ideal location in a lot of ways . . .

Ironically, about 15 years ago, National Geographic featured Steelville in a thing they used to have that highlighted zip codes in America. They basically called Steelville a dump and an armpit. I think that coverage stung and kicked a bunch of people in the butt. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't write the same thing today.
