My parents are gonna have a house out there and I am gonna leave my stuff with them. I ship out for the USAF Nov 17 for basic. I am gonna have some sort of mechanical job in the service enlisted for 6 years and I am gonna be an E3 and try for Officer... Now what do I have to look forward to in Missouri besides the lax gun laws? I like to go hiking, camping, back packing, fishing, and off roading.

Californian women suck... How are the chicks there down to earth I hope! :D

There I am.... I own only 8 guns :D I plan to buy that SAM7 when they come out and the new Styer Aug! Of course a shit load of standard cap mags 20 and 32 rounders for my 92FS! ;)

Well where I live they're superficial or gay. They like phoney men who are wiggers or whatever just not themselves. Especially the sissies because they're easy to puss whip. They're not into men like because I like to shoot guns and go hunting. The fact that I am honest and kind they just don't bother with me here... lol I cannot wait to get out of here man because this area is so isolated. Its called Arroyo Grande. San Luis Obispo County on the Central Coast.

I meet gals I have have only had two interested in me (A year ago) but both the gorgeous hispanic women didnt workout for me. My luck is crap here man with chicks. Always something ranging from a gay jesus freak, problems, the dungeon BF, or they never call me back.

The best gals are the ones that have the full spectrum of skills and are sharp enough to know when to apply them.

Yeah skills are nice and I just found out a friend of mine she switched from gay to straight and is with a jobless BF... She used to hunt when she lived in Kentucky too lol... People are tree huggers here and hate that stuff.

I don't get it... I work my butt off as a Custodian here and earn money. Yet they like to go for losers who don't work, don't drive, and treat them like shit. Either that or these "men" are all out sissies... lol.

Well it looks like I am enlisting for four years now I spoke with my recruiter yesterday. He convinced me my life could change... Besides I make E3 in 10 months. I made E2 because I have college credits. After I am done with basic I get to choose a mechanical job. Three years from now I may try to become a SEER or a gnarly combat controller also... (that way I will have something to brag about) Especially if I don't make officer. He also told me they only choose the guys with engineering bachelors degrees. So I may just keep that in mind during my service.

The Chicks I am probably better off on spending money on ammo and guns. ;) Don't need to be asking a women permission to do things. I see poor souls on here that have to ask their wives crap. I don't think I ever wanna be married become grounded for life and puss whipped!

You will have the opportunity to take college classes at most duty stations where you are permanent party.  I recommend you take advantage of that.  Your friendly taxpayer will foot the bill while you are on active duty.  Take classes at the local community college or university, not at the diploma mills like Golden Gate and Phoenix that award credit for "life experience".  The idea is to get an education.

You will also have the opportunity to apply to the service academies, and you can apply for ROTC scholarships.  I'll assume the USAF still has a program where you can attend school time full time after you've collected a sufficient number of credit hours during your enlistment so you can finish a degree on the way to a commission.  I was eligible at the end of my enlistment but elected to separate.

If the recruiter told you that you can be commissioned as an officer without a degree, he lied to you.  Recruiters don't generally lie outright, but they stretch the truth and fib by omission of crucial details.

"Get to choose a mechanical job" is a wide open invitation to getting bent over.  In any case, you will serve at the pleasure of the United States, but damn, I would get something nailed down a little tighter by narrowing it down to three choices.  At least you'd have an idea you tried to do something other than work in the motor pool.

My advice is to get a fun job, flying as a boomer or a flight engineer, or even a loadmaster.  Spend the next few years seeing the world.

Or, if you don't want to go to school, you can be a jack-off and spend your money on booze.  Most of your colleagues will be on this path.

My recruiter told me I have to get a Bachelors degree but it be best to get it in something like engineering because that is generally who they choose. I did mention load master to him that was the first job i was offered at MEPS but thats all BS he told me lol... He did mention that job is awesome fun though. However I am going to take the GI bill too because it only offered once! I am definitely I am going to take college classes!

Yeah I love beer but I can easily spend my money on other things. I wanna buy cool guns I cannot own in CA, ammo, and save up for a retirement. (open up a Roth IRA) Buy some property somewhere and that way I will be good!

I don't mind working on cars that is what I do sometimes anyways... Its a good skill to know as it is. Really... that is what I took in college.

My wife and I lived just outside of Springfield in Republic for some time but decided to move back to home (St. Louis) to be closer to most of the family once the kids started coming.

I loved Springfield and the area!  There is an awesome MODOC shooting range (Andy Dalton I believe) in Bois B'Darc (pronounced "Boe Dark") right outside Springfield and includes trap/skeet and a 3-D walking archery course.  Osage Orange Sharpshooters, Springfield Benchrest Rifle Club, etc.  Bass Pro Shops headquarters.  Some decent golf courses.  Lots of good restaurants.  You are 30+ minutes away from Table Rock Lake (been vacationing with the family down there since the days of diapers).  Halfway decent fourwheeling areas close too!  Lifestyle is much more laid back down there compared to St. Louis in my opinion!

You will like it alot I think!

Congrats on your parents moving to Free America!

I am a California convert myself, I now am very happy I made the move.

As for Hiking, plenty of that all around Springfield and out a few miles.

Camping, same there.

Back Packing, lots of through trails around.

Fishing, any where you look really.

Off Roading, oh yeah. You will love that part. Many trails are OPEN with no huge regulation. Southern Missouri Off Road Ranch is a few miles east of Springfield. I have taken my CJ5 up there once so far and enjoyed all the trails.

Thank you for your service to Our Country!  I believe you are going to basic at almost the same time of year as I did. I went to basic in the USAF November 26th 1996. I hit Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years while there. Be prepared to have the TI's give you a hard time for it too.

Ummm the national forest areas near there... I love to blow crud u pout in the booines... I clean up afterwords of course! I do it here in California and when I was out in Montana I shot tracers out of my M1 Carbine ;)

I am sure I will love Springfield I stop working Nov 1....

Thanks I am looking forward to the USAF! I get my choice at a job in the mechanical realm after basic.

I am sure there will be some nice folks to help me out with getting my evil sinister rifle collection going.

Bars? Strip clubs? I know theres a fireworks factory, and of course the Bass Pro HQ my parents told me about that one lol... Sounds like my kinda place and all kinds of pawn shops like there were in MT.. .hehe

and we have CMMG Inc which is awesome... Now about that upper I was asking about the full sized length one with the 16" barrel? Anyone know about it or have one?

I'm not Jeff, but CMMG shows up regularly at the local gunshows at the fairgrounds in Springfield.  Saves you a trip and/or shipping, plus gives you an excuse to look at how most others are getting ripped off on almost everything.

If you're from cali, being a fan of guns and trucks...you'll love it here.  I moved down to the Springfield area(Marshfield) from Chicago about 4.5 years ago, and I love it.

I'm not much in to the whole truck thing, but my ex business partner and several of my buddies are popular around the springfield area for their rides...I.E. lifted(insanely high) black yukon with an escalade front clip.  So if this is your thing, there's plenty of that here in all forms(rock crawling, trail riding, mudding, shows etc).  This area also yields a lot for import car and muscle car fans, as well.  Within a 20ish minute drive from Springfield down 60 is the Ozark International Dragstrip.

As for outdoor stuff, I'm really only about the fishing.  Not much for hiking...but I'm almost positive they have plenty of trails for that and for biking.

As for the firearm stuff...laid back laws, no permits to purchase, annual gun shows, an open range within 20-30 minutes of Springfield down I-65, TONS of firearm shops...not too bad at all.  The range is part of Busiek forest preserve, but last I heard it was closed for some reason.  Anyone know what's going on over there?

Can't forget hunting.  I've never gone hunting, but I see that it's a big thing out here and I hope to try it out some time.  There's rifle, muzzleloader, shotgun and bow if I'm correct.  If you're in to hunting and want to learn more, you may want to pick up a pamphlet somewhere out here, or ask someone who knows more than I do.

Women...well, I can't speak very highly of most of them from my experiences so far.  The only one I ever got with that is worth mentioning, is my fiance whom I've been with for about 3 years.

If you have any questions, need any info, anything at all...feel free to ask.

If you have any questions, need any info, anything at all...feel free to ask. I was just there on sat. its open again. it got washed out by all the flooding a while ago and the bridge got knocked out. they rebuilt the range its a bit nicer now has concrete benches 2 per range 25, 50, and 100 now all the jackasses that like to shoot the tables will have to think twice. it is open but the bridge had another tree fall on it, it is a bit spooky to cross but no biggie. paper targets only though so if you like to see bottles blow up you'll risk a littering ticket if an agent sees you, and they watch somtimes with binos ive watched them too.

You'll be disappointed in Missouri.  We do not have millions of contiguous acres of BLM property and barren unoccupied desert as found in California.

Trashing the National Forests, State Parks, or Conservation areas here will get you a ticket and a fine.  You might get away with it for a while, but you should probably count on getting tagged if you persist on public property.  Missourians take pride in our state's public areas and we've spent a lot of money in the last 30 years to have premium areas to hunt, fish, camp, hike, and so on.  We don't like assholes that would shoot up their junk and leave it behind for someone else to clean up.

Now on private property, that's a whole nuther proposition and no one cares what the hell you do.  Actually a few Federal agencies do care, but it's unlikely you'll get bothered if you don't do anything monumentally stupid.

When this site started, several of us gathered at Finger Lakes to shoot stuff, including junk.  We left it in better shape when we finished, mostly;  there was that one day when the 100 yard berm got a huge divot blown out by a bucket full of tannerite...

Those were fun shoots.

Man, are you in for a surprise.  You'll be serving at the pleasure of the US government, and in case you didn't notice, there's a war Asia in which you'll likely be a participant soon.  The odds of getting a duty station of choice are so low as to be pointless.

lax gun laws
I wouldn't say lax, but more realistic.

Congrats on joining the AF. I'm not exactly sure how it works in the AF, but in the Marine Corp and the Army, you better pick a job befor you go to Basic Training or you will get stuck with whatever they stick you with. That could determine weather you have a great 4 years or the crappiest 4 years of your life.

I used to live in Springfield, and I'm telling you, you will love it.  Great camping, trout fishing, off roading, decent gun shops, nice people.

And there are like 6 colleges in or around Springfield.  There are women EVERYWHERE.  A great many of these are over privileged rich girls from STL and KC, and are therefore EASY.
