This morning I went to the local county office to get my wife's license plate (translation for ILL "Lyzinpl8") renewal.  Ahead of me were about 5 people, 4 of which appeared to be hispanic.

The first one approaches the clerk and speaks to her in Spanish.  The clerk asks if she could speak English, the customer speaks in Spanish again but louder.  The clerk then stands up and addresses the line, "I can only do transactions in English.  If you only speak Spanish please have a seat and the clerk which speaks Spanish will be in about 1pm."

 Everyone speaks English now.

She didn't say, "Talking louder still doesn't mean I can decipher Spanish!"

When I'm overseas, I refer to my loud voice as the "universal translator."  It rarely works.

+1.  Good to see idiocy works both ways.

I love to [jokingly] tell people that "If you can't speak Spanish, the next best thing is to speak Spanish really loud and really slow."

I guess, 'When in Rome, do what the Romans do.' is no longer applied?

Nope....but after the clerk made her announcement, everyone was suddenly able to speak English.

That is awesome. I hope we as a state (the rest of the country is screwed) start standing up for our rights first and foremost.

Check this out for how other countries handle "invasions".
