After reading a few crime rate threads, I started doing some google research tonight, and came across many interesting sites that keep crime statistics. The site I'm referencing used data from 1965 - 2004. Of note, one site developed U.S. and Global murder rates and listed the top 4 "Murder Capitals Of the World"; (I've never even heard of Gary,Indiana.... does anyone have a thought about why that city is so dangerous?)

1) Gary, Indiana: "", 79.4 homicides per 100k, & Murder Capitol of the World.

2) New Orleans: "", 85.8 homicides per 100k.

3) Detroit: "", 59 homicides per 100k, & "nation's most violent city".

4) Washington, DC: "", 80.6 homicides per 100k.

I've edited out the ethnicity from the statistics, so as not to start a race debate, and because in the U.S., it's not politically correct to include that type of knowledge/data when reporting stats. The sheer % per capita of the reported murder rates globally is eye-opening. Also of interest is a correlation between murder rates and significant Supreme Court rulings, and the statistical impact to the reported Murder rates thereafter.

1) In 1963, prayer was removed from U.S. Public Schools = murder rate increased by 250% during the next decade

2) In 1964, Gangs started to organize and expand = dramatic increase in crime rates, specifically violent crime in the U.S.

3) In 1973, the Supreme Court bans executions = another dramatic increase in murder rates across the U.S. in the following decade

Anyway, just thought I would share this. Most folks would be surprised to learn just how dangerous it is to live in urban U.S. cities.

IIRC, Gary IN borders Chicago on the shit side and is a small town. Anywho, that causes the unusually high statistic, while Chicago proper has more area/population to dillute its numbers (which are higher, just not by % )

Gary is also THE example of the bleak post-industrial town of the midwest. There's really nobody left there but people who can't go anywhere else. Wide boulevards and empty buildings.
