Hello everyone,
I was approached by my boss Friday afternoon where I work, and was asked if I would be interested in transferring to Williston, ND. I did spend a couple weeks up there working in December as they needed help and I was not busy down here in NM. I did like the selection at a local fun shop, how are the gun shows? My questions are, how is the housing situation up there, and how is it to transfer my NM CCW to a ND one? I prefer to change my residency when I move b/c of hunting and fishing licenses. I am not worried about the cold so much as I grew up in Iowa and have been down here less than 2 years. Anything else I should know and think about before I make my decision? I need to let my boss know around the 25th my decision. Thanks everyone! |

NM and ND have reciprocity, so your current permit is valid, but if you change your residency you would probably have to get the ND permit, its not hard or expensive. just take the class do the paperwork and send it in just like anywhere else. as far as housing goes, I don't know about Williston, but housing has a very wide range of pricing in the state, there are apartments in some places of the state that are more expensive than owning and some houses that could probably be paid for in full within a few years. though it doesn't take much of an imagination to figure out what types of houses those are. ETA: apparently handgunlaw.us was and is wrong on this one as I am more inclined to believe the AG's site. just get the ND permit. |

I'm from Williston and live just a bit east of the where the oil boom is taking place. I'm an electrician now but was on the rigs for 2 years until we had the small bust last winter. Housing is even tougher now than ever because so many people bought homes before they thought the tax credit program would expire. Even fewer homes on the market than usual. There are apartments but a decent one is spendy. Are you looking to rent or buy?
As far as the CCW goes, your going to have to contact the attorney generals office. http://www.ag.state.nd.us/bci/cw/reciprocity.htm Currently ND is waiting for NM to respond to their request for reciprocity. What kind of work do you do? |

I've been to williston a few times, never stayed there though. The housing is probably the same there as it is here in Minot. If you want to live in the city, i'm sure there is a high demand for houses, and apartments are probably going to be hard to find. If you dont mind to drive a bit, i'd suggest looking in the surrounding towns for a house, because you can usually get a lot better bang for your buck if you stay out of the town. Another thing to look at would maybe be a some sort of single or double wide trailer or maybe a prefab home. Not sure what your wanting to spend to rent/own a house but usually those fall way below the price of renting an apartment in most places. Hunting up here in ND is awesome most of the time, we just had a killer waterfowl season this last year. Theres lots of fishing to do as well. Gun shows around here are pretty much non-existant except for maybe a local yearly show. Definitely none that are on a regular basis. The flip side to that is there are generally good local/regional gun shops everywhere in the state, and you can always find cheap guns at estate auctions. One other thing i like about this state is that they are very fire-arm friendly. No one even bats an eye when me and the friends go out to the range and pull out a full auto or a supressed rifle, they're all over the place up here and its usually pretty easy to get whoever your local reps are to sign off on the NFA items your wanting to buy. Meh hope this helps out some, shoot me a IM if you have any more specific questions and i'll do my best to answer them for ya.

I am an engineer for an oil field service company. I wouldn't mind living outside of town, but don't want to increase my commute to much as most of the time I've got to be at work really early and may get off late and do lots of driving for work.
I am still currently looking to rent, unless it really is that much less to buy a place. Problem is I could move again and I haven't looked very hard into how the tax credit would work with that. Good news on good fishing since I have a boat Thanks for the info, more comments are appreciated! |
