I've got an appointment near the Superdome at 1250 Poydras St next month and will have my wife and 6 year old daughter with me. I haven't been to New Orleans since before Katrina and have no idea which areas are safe and which are not. I would like to get a hotel near the appointment site if its safe to do so. Can anyone tell me if that area is OK and if not, where's the nearest area that is. Thanks. |

Hope this helps. The above link will give you crimes reported within a 1 mile radius of a given location. You can enter a different address if you like. If you stay at the Hyatt, you are literally right next to your destination, but you'll pay a premium price (it's a very nice hotel). During the day you're probably OK in the area, but night can be a different story. New Orleans is a big city with the usual big city problems. If you stay at the Hyatt, I can recommend Borgne restaurant for you and the wife. Your kid may or may not like the place, but it's not purely an adult venue. If your family will be doing touristy things while you go to your meeting, maybe pick a hotel near the Children's Museum. Your kid can play like crazy there in a nice environment and a hotel near there is only a short cab ride to your destination. If you stay near here, there are several restaurants within walking distance that you'd like. If you're going to be tied up most of the day, maybe pick a place near the Aquarium in the French Quarter. You can still take a reasonably short cab ride to your meeting, and the family can go to the Aquarium and/or Insectarium and maybe wander the Quarter (again, day is safer than night). Check out the "Things to do" sticky above for attractions other than what I've mentioned. |

Lots of places to stay around there. Nicest would be the Roosevelt or the Le Pavillion. Many other cheaper options.
Lots of things to do also. Pretty safe area. Poydras and the Jackson Square area are touristy areas and somewhat safe. I would avoid Bourbon Street. And I would also plan on not being out much after dark. Two kid friendly things to do would be the Aquarium/IMAX and also the DDay Museum. I've been a La. resident all my life and I have decided to boycott New Orleans if they remove the Confederate soldier monuments. |

There are places near the Dome I would readily go and areas near the Dome I would stay away from. There are hotels in the area I would avoid and others I would stay at. How near and what times are important details needed to answer your questions. I understand you'd probably rather not give out your full itinerary. |
