The thread about engraving got me thinking, I know, a dangerous thing. How many people have actually been asked to show their tax stamp to either local or federal LE? The only time I've been asked to show a stamp was at a range. Shot with plenty of LE/Feds/etc...not once have they ever asked. |

I've been into NFA stuff since 2008ish. Never ever been asked for any papers or anything. This is in both GA and FL. It's kind of the reason I've never been to RBGC or applied for a membership (there was a long thread about them here a while ago).
Also, LE wise, I've never asked to see anyone's anythings. |

Stolen guns are exponentially more common than unregistered nfa items. Aside from the redneck that has a vertical grip on a pistol or perhaps a shotgun cut down. I've yet to see anything that rises above a technicality. I'm sure they are out there but not in our circles.
It's important to remember that the ATF doesn't create laws. They make policy's and interpretations. Some of which may be illegal and others which are clarifying the law. Only congress and court rulings are a good measure of what'll get you in trouble. I don't push the limits but I ask the questions. Particularly in regulations that are counterintuitive and / or inconsistent with other rules. |
| I've had an RO at a WMA range come running(literally) to tell me that I'd better have a tax stamp for my .22 suppressor, but he got all huffy and walked off when I went to take it out and show it to him. He followed up by saying that he didn't need to see it, but if the police or DNR came out for some reason, they would. Weird. |

I got into NFA stuff around 2000. I've never been asked for any papers or proof. I have been questioned by citizens to inquire about general legalities of owning these items but it was educational curiosity and not enforcement. I've shot around LEO's both local and Federal and I haven't encountered any who really gave a dam.
Outside of a machine gun or short barreled shotgun, the average law enforcement officer wouldn't know what an NFA item or tax stamp looks like let alone what a Trust is. I did roll call training for my shift on tax stamps and trusts just for general knowledge because 16 years ago the average gun enthusiast didn't owne Class III/NFA stuff. That's not the case anymore. |
