From the Texas law:
Does this mean that you can or cannot own NFA weapons in Texas? |
Yes... it means NFA weapons are illegal in Texas. HOWEVER.... as written above, it is a *defense of prosecution* if you are in accordance with Federal law.... so if you have the correct NFA paperwork, then any and all charges have to be dropped... you cannot be prosecuted. Arrested, yes. Prosecuted, no. Therefore, if a cop sees you have paperwork, they dont arrest you... as it would be pointless. Believe me, when I would shoot out at my family's land, and I would bump fire a few mags... someone always called the sherrif about "hearing machineguns" and they would always stop by and check the scene out. I am not a lawyer.... nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

You are correct, sir. Harris County is a definite NO (unless you know someone...) There'd be way too much machine gun crime in Harris County if we allowed that NFA stuff. Alpine |
Last I heard the Bexar County Sheriff will sign for SBS, SBR, and MG but no suppressors. He believes that supressor are only used by assassins or something of that nature. He won't even sign for SAPD officers from what a officer told me a year or so ago at one of the tactical carbine shoots. The only way to get a can into Bexar is via a corp or if you live in small town where the local Chief will sign. James Austin, Texas |

Thanks for the info, kind of what I figured. |
Bexar county? What's that, San Antonio? |
You might want to think about joining a private range like The Impact Zone. They are NFA riendly! NFA Investments, A BATFE Licensed Firearms Manufacturer Keith Norman, owner Tel. The new sheriff in Travis county will sign. In fact, he mailed my forms back to me, which was great! He is very NFA friendly. James : I have heard from several people who have talked to the Bexar county (yes, san antonio) chief that he won't sign on suppressors because he is a good ol' boy who believes they would only be used for poaching. Sigh. I love Austin! Doc |
| My parents inherited my grandparents mobile home on the lake in Granbury, which I believe is Hood County. I remember that county being a "dry" county at one time and, don't know if it still is or not, the Sheriff being quite strict on firearms. Anyone know if Hood County is "friendly" as far as CLEO signatures? Thanks for any input. |
I can double vouche for Travis County or Williamson (I am in Travis/Austin) and have gotten one set of form 4s back from the new sheriff. They sat on Margo Frazier's (former sheriff) desk for 5 months and were returned to me, 3 days after the new sheriff took office. James Austin, Texas |
MOJO, I don't think it's the county, but the city, as you can have the Chief of Police sign off. Unless of course you live in the county only. I live in Dallas County and have registered NFA weapons. Sincerely shooter100 |
I really should specify both. Example, in Tarrant County: Sheriff Anderson will sign it, but Chief of Police in Ft Worth probably won't sign it. |
