The next swing state? Republicans believe it could be New Jersey

"Take this four-year time frame: From the '21 race to the '24 race, the two biggest races in the state, the most watched race in the state, governor and president, both close calls," said Russell, who worked as a top adviser on Ciattarelli's campaign. "You take the registration numbers, which have dramatically shifted towards Republicans, and I think you look at the '25 governor's race as a true toss-up.

"Republicans should feel very good that if we nominate the right candidate, we can win this governor race," he added.

State Democrats also concurred that the 2025 gubernatorial race will be pivotal, depending on who they nominate.

"The real test for this year is the governor's race   depends on who we nominate," Suleiman said. "Can that Democratic governor candidate do well? Because clearly, the conventional wisdom is, after two terms of Murphy, the state is ripe for a Republican governor."

A Chat with New Jersey Gubernatorial Candidate, Bill Spadea

News2A: Let's talk about the Second Amendment. New Jersey has roughly 1.5 million gun owners. To date, nearly 50,000 concealed carry permits have been issued by the state. The fastest growing demographics in the firearms community in NJ are minorities and women. What does the growing interest in the Second Amendment reveal to you about New Jersey residents?

Bill: New Jerseyans need to feel safe again. The current administration would rather let criminals roam the streets than keep them in jail. That will change on day one when I am Governor. I'm grateful that it's easier for New Jerseyans to obtain a concealed carry permit, but the fact of the matter is this   you shouldn't need a gun on your hip in order to feel safe in your own neighborhood or, even worse, your own home. I will enforce the timing of licensing and registration to expedite your ability to buy and carry and we'll end bail reform by declaring an emergency on day one. I support stand your ground and reciprocal right to carry.

News2A: Give yourself a rating on the Second Amendment. Are there any gun restrictions you support, including bans on "assault weapons" and "high capacity magazines," red flag laws, NFA items, or prohibitions on concealed carry?

Bill: Well, in that race for Congress you mentioned earlier I received an A rating from the NRA, and I was proud of it. I think that says a lot about where I stand. One of my opponents in this primary, Jack Ciattarelli, once bragged that he was the only Republican NOT endorsed by the NRA. I adamantly oppose mag limits and red flag laws. We need to come down hard on criminals and elevate and empower legal gun owners.

I've seen some video of him talking about amnesty for illegal aliens. I'm not sure that's congruent with his pro-DJT claims.

He might be a shape shifter.

Could be. Most politicians watch which way the wind blows. I seem to remember Trump offering amnesty to the DACA people in his first term.

I still haven't decided who to vote for.

Sarah McBride, first trans congresswoman, endorses Sherrill for governor

McBride is the latest member of Congress to back Sherrill's gubernatorial bid, following on the heels of some of Sherrill's national security-focused colleagues like Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin and Pennsylvania Rep. Chrissy Houlahan. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly)'s campaign, too, has received endorsements from eight of his current and former House colleagues around the country.

But neither of them have received endorsements from any current members of New Jersey's delegation. Two endorsements each have instead gone to Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and former State Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-West Deptford); Baraka has Reps. LaMonica McIver (D-Newark) and Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Ewing) in his corner, while Sweeney has South Jerseyans Herb Conaway (D-Delran) and Donald Norcross (D-Camden) in his.
