So, seeing how the Palomino Range is only about 10 minutes from my house these days, I've made it my goal to hit some of the Action Pistol and maybe 22 Cal Two Gun matches this year. I was all ready to go for the January Action pistol match, but it was canceled for snow. February I went feral hog hunting instead. Looks like I'm clear next weekend for Action Pistol, and I'd like to hit some future events as well. http://wnpl.org/Calendar/index.htm Who's in? I'm always more motivated to show up if I know I'll have company. Matches start at 0900 (setup at 0800), and usually wrap up by noon. Cost is $25 for non-members, $20 for members. Annual membership is $20/individual, $30 family. For those of you who haven't been to a WNPL match before, you don't have to deal with the normal public range folks when you're doing it. I haven't been in over a year, but they've historically had good folk running the events. The Action Pistol events are the first Saturday of the month. In May, the Glock Sport Shooting group will be out, extra fees, but they give away Glocks and do free tech support/repairs/upgrades while you wait. |
|
I do USPSA with them. Joined at the beginning of the year to help support the club and it pays for itself with 5 matches discounted $5.
I might make some 22 shoots now that most of my stuff is setup but my 22 pistol is OLD school so magazine changes aren't fun. Plus I think one mag is bad. |
|
A friend of mine who has never shot any type of competitive match wants to go...so I do believe that is on the agenda. I have shot IDPA, USPSA and 3-gun in the distant past and have not been active for about a year, should be fun. My friend has also expressed some interest in the 3-gun that WNPL hosts. I look forward to seeing you fellas out there, I'll be the quiet guy in the desert MarPat boonie hat... NV Geologist, would love to chat about your hog hunt Keep The High Ground, G |

I try and make most of the USPSA matches as it is my main game. I have been considering hitting up a idpa or action pistol match with my carry gun to get some practice.

I want to do this but am terribly afraid of how bad I suck. Everyone "sucks" their first time compared to everyone else. When you see the results you realize you did better than you thought. You can only improve. First time my goal was to not come in last. Now it's to have fun, fix mistakes, deal with everything that comes up during the course of fire, and make sure I have enough bullets to last the year. I was a little surprised at how much people hand brass back to you. For years I thought it was a sport for rich guys who could afford to lose brass. I never thought it would be so easy to keep your brass and maybe get a little extra. Plus everyone is there to make sure we're all safe, having a good time, and helping out the new guys with advice like "Never run out of ammo in a gunfight." I might have to shoot production next time and see how I do with 2 extra bullets. Production seems to be a more popular class. I'm just realizing I have what I need (minus mag holder) to run the class should I decide to. come out, have fun, be safe, meet new people, enjoy the weather and become addicted. |

I've only ever shot production/action, and I love it. I try to hit at least two events a year, but got zero last year. This year, I'm making up for lost time. I have plans for after the shoot this weekend, but in the future, we can roll into a hike after the shoot. Lotta mountainsides to wander around nearby. |

Starting a hike around 3:00...boy you crazy! After those matches are done I'm surprised how thirsty I have been even with the heat waves of 30 degrees. |

I was the guy trying to get the subgun matches going but there wasn't a ton of interest and with the scarcity and cost of ammo these days it would be a tough sell.
Plus......I can be a bit of a flake about driving down from South Lake when the snow flies..........I'd rather be skiing in freezing weather. I would still like to get a group of Northern Nevada subgun/FA owners together occasionally for some fun shoots though. Maybe something casual out at Derby Dam or the Carson range if anyone else is interested? |

Roll call for this weekend? I'll be there with a buddy and his son. Probably in a grey jeep Cherokee, wearing a battered wool cowboy hat with a rattlesnake band. I'm 50/50. It depends how I roll out of bed and feel. Any idea what you're shooting? Need anything such as magazine holders or holster? |
|
I'm pretty well set, but I have a buddy who is held up by a shortage of Gen 4 Glock 40 cal mags (he's running a lefty G27). I'll probably be shooting a G22. Buddy will be shooting a Springfield XD. I could use a holster for a P22 for his son, if someone has one laying around. |

No video from me, but the event was great. Met G and his buddy there, handed out a few more AR500 test targets, and had a blast. Total of five stages shot, Action Pistol mixed with 3-Gun. We were setup and shooting by about 10AM, wrapped up around 3PM. Weather was nice, little overcast, t-shirts or light jackets. Wind only kicked up a little for the rifle guys shooting out to 350 yards. Fuck that spinner target, and the door stage. ![]() I may try 3-gun next time, just as an excuse to drag out the Saiga. I bought the 2013 membership, so I'm self obligated to hit at least three more events this year to pay for it.

Good times at the shoot today, met up with NVgeologist as mentioned. That spinner was fun...it only took me 10 rounds to flip it! That door stage was just a freakin' nightmare, Monte just chuckled. Think I'll check out IDPA next time and might do a 3-gun. Good to get the muscle memory firing and do a lil shoot-n-move. Keep The High Ground, G |

Never understood why anyone would shoot one of them wheel guns on purpose ![]() Hush...youngster. Before all of your favorite "bottom-feeders" and poly wunderguns were around Colonel Colt made one of the finest fighting tools known to mankind. We've had this convo before...some of us old-timers still appreciate the versatility and satisfaction of carrying a wheelgun. I still miss my first-ever centerfire handgun, a Smith & Wesson M19 Combat Magnum...back in the ole days, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. I was 12, it came with a Bianchi holster and 2 speedloaders. Looks like I am shooting production tomorrow I thought about doing the same with my 229 but have no energy today. I think the weather would be more fun to shoot in I just can't get going. Yeah we are bowing out because of the rain. The only thing that really bothers me is how it trashes the targets and shooting/scoring with bags sucks. But really I am just not feeling it

Would they set up less stages with less shooters in the rain? If I was in town I'd try out IDPA next weekend. I would need a fishing vest first. |

My first competition gun was a model 10 that I shot out of a nylon bianchi. I just choose to live in the modern age I am living in the modern age. I shoot THEM cause I like them. I shot the baby today (586), don't have enough speedloaders for the 3" Model 29 otherwise I would have shot that. I use the pistol all the time. The revolver just makes it harder. Looked around for you, but didn't know what to look for. So I went about my day. Semper Fi, Luis R. |

Why do they have to run so early? It's an hour away from me and I really wish I could wake up before 10:00. I leave the house around 7:30 at the latest to get out there in time to help setup. Once you do it one or two times you'll see how easy it really is. |
