So I got this awesome "notice of violation" from the great city of New Orleans while I was down there seeing a customer. I'm not one for running red lights but apparently I didn't come to a complete stop at Poydras and St. Charles. $135 fee. I've heard that if you don't pay it, they can only sell it to a debt collection agency. Any truth to this? What's the 411 on NOLA traffic cameras?

Any help is appreciated!

That's pretty much what most of the photo enforcement systems in Louisiana do since photo tickets are Civil penalties versus the Criminal penalty when a ticket is issued by a real police officer.  As a result, their only way to recover the Civil penalty is to either turn the individual over to a collection agency, which is subject to being disputed, OR sue the individual in small claims court.

On the flip side, if you fail to pay a ticket issued to you by a police officer, that will generally end badly and cost a pretty penny.

So what are the real chances of them suing over a $135 fine? And even though they put an officers name on the ticket, I would assume that this is still only a civil matter and not criminal.

If you ever park in New Orleans, you could have issues----the parking people use their little scanner vans to look for vehicles with unpaid photo tickets as well as parking tickets, and will boot vehicles that pop up.

Pay and move on.

For the TLDR crowd: Pay and move on.

the solution involves a crosscut shredder.

I got a ticket back in March of last year. They sent a few threatening letters, but nothing ever came from an attorney or collection agency. I check my credit regularly and nothing ever showed up.

Trash them.

That sounds about right. Thanks for the feedback. I didn't pay it. I care less and less about that city every time I go.
