Ok, so now that it is warm I need to find a range to join. I have been to Fletcher's about a dozen times for some pistol shooting and this weekend I am going to give McMillers a try because one of my girlfriends co-workers is a member.
I would like to find a place near Waukesha, but I am not afraid to drive a little extra if necessary. I would like a place to shoot pistol, and rifles. I would like 200-300yds but I can deal with a nice 100 yd range if it is the best choice. Please let me know where you shoot and what the pros and cons are. Thanks! |

Just to clarify about McMiller –– you don't have to be a member or go with a member –– it is just a way to save $. I have a membership as well... Hmm, might have to swing by this weekend. Thus far I haven't saved any $ so I have to get some visits in before July. I am in the same boat you are looking for something around the same area, would prefer within a half hour or so. Every time someone brings this up and we get nowhere, I become that much more tempted to find some people and get in on a chunk of land and build up a nice "private" range. Wishful thinking. |

How's Daniel Boone? I'm way on the north side and would take me about 25 mins to get there, probably similar for you. I need a new place to go as well. I stopped by over the winter and it seemed pretty decent. 200 yards I think. I know many on here pump the Racine club but driving 45 minutes through the heart of Milwaukee is not happening for me

If you guys want to go check out boone some time and they will let us in, I will drive. Let me know. Also to WI57, I prefer LaX rifle club. You going to join that or what? |

When I finally do become a member we need to go back and shoot at 600 again. Sparta is so quite, usually nobody there when I go, and its not that far out of your way.

The ONLY complaints I have is they don't have a pistol pit to set things up and run them on your own and their rifle goes to only 200 (both are standard for SE Wisconsin, so they aren't lacking in those departments, but neither are they excelling).

Just wondering. This sounds very promising. |

Is anyone a member of Schultz gun club in Muskego? Or been there? I live less than a mile from it. Edit: I am thinking of going to McMiller April 2nd also. I'm a member there. Good vibrant club in terms of membership. They do LOTS of USPSA/IDPA and host GSSF there, do bowling pin shoots etc. so it's very "non Fudd". They also have archery and trap. The club IIRC is now a majority stake holder in it's land company, the others are families/heirs of former founders. The club has right of first refusal of any other shares. And it's proximity to Big Muskego lake keeps large portions from being used for much else because of wetland/lowland protections. One action bay is available where you're permitted to drag around barricades and place targets where you wish. There's also a motion to get bowling pin shooting available full time too so you can actually punch something other than paper. The downsides of the club: - No shoot alone rule. Due to a stink about bullet holes in a downrange house a few years back, they instituted a no-shoot-alone rule, and installed steel baffles that hide the sky/horizon. The claims turned out to be false, (was a drug dealer getting drive-bys on his home) but the city came down hard on the club anyway, and it wasn't PC to make a stink and embarrass Muskego or the Muskego PD. They're installing a web cam on the range so members can see who's there. And they have a Facebook page now, so eventually people could use it to meet up and have a buddy. If you bring your spouse or kid who's old enough, you're fine. - Mosquitoes. Hordes of them from May to September. Bring spray. - How busy the club is with NISA/USPSA/IDPA shoots, often means the range is closed on weekends until the afternoon. The action bays are sideways behind the 100/75/50/25/15 lines. - Only 100 yards available. (The club is building a 300 yard range ASAP this year or 2012 when the foundry sand disposal co. can be arranged to build the berms and DNR checks are cleared.) - Firing line is not covered. It's a good club overall, considering how close to Metro Milwaukee it is. If you've seen Boone, Schultz looks like a dump. However, last I heard, Boone didn't even allow any "humanoid" targets, even USPSA/IDPA "Box and octagon" Perhaps that's changed. Although it would make me worried that Boone was PC/Fudd enough to hamper certain kinds of shooting.

Private ranges are the way to go. Just wondering where are the five ranges in Vilas county? I know of Caywood in woodruff, one east of Eagle River, and one just out of Boulder Junction. Thankx |
| West Bend Barton Sportsman's Club is just a short drive up I-45 from Boone, and the shooters there are a lot more friendly from what I've seen. My buddy (with whom I used to go to Boone) even dropped his membership at Boone due to the large concentration of self-important Fudds up there. We're now members at WBBSC, which has a nice 100 and 200yd line where they have monthly reduced-range Highpower and other rifle matches. In Boone's defense, the running deer shoots are a ton of fun, and there are assholes everywhere, I might have just run into the few big ones at Boone (Saukville has this problem also, many of the shotgun chic crowd can FOAD as far as I'm concerned!). |
