| I want to go shooting before I go off to Basic so I don't completely look like a fool when I'm there. I need to find a good range in the Fairfield/Cincinnati area. Is there any place that allows you to rent a rifle to fire? My family doesn't own any firearms since they have some interesting liberal views except for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated... |

I can't speak for the military way, since I have not been in the military (just the design side of things), but consider that you may be better served by not learning bad habits on a hurried basis. I think they will teach you to shoot. Its not like getting your private pilot's license before military flight school to lesson the chance of getting washed out. The Army (guessing on the branch) ain't gonna wash you out because of poor shooting; they will instead teach you to shoot the Army way. As for looking like a fool -- don't worry about it. You won't be the only person there whose only firearms experience is shooting grunts, jackals, and elites on XBOX. If a local member, who is truly schooled in .mil ways, offers to help, that might be useful. But it would mean taking you to their range and shooting their guns. I am not aware of any range that will rent rifles. Target World (north Cincinnati area) will rent handguns, and even provide some basic instruction, if you really want to fire a gun before you head off. Thanks in advance for your service. |

I wouldn't sweat it. You will learn how to shoot if you pay attention and listen to the drills. Then make sure your buddy is actually coaching you instead of dayreaming. You will be suprised how many other guys haven't shot before either, and they will learn to shoot too. Jay |
+1 My nephew graduated from basic recently. Prior to enlisting, he had never fired a weapon. (I tried to take him shooting with his brother an I on many occasions, but he never showed any interest.) He ended up with the highest marksmanship score in his company, and is now a DSM. |
I wouldn't worry about shooting before you go to basic. The military will teach you everything that is needed and you will NOT look like a fool. Trust me, I was in the Army and I had NEVER fired a firearm prior to basic traning. WARNING do NOT call your weapon "A GUN" it is known only as "A WEAPON" in basic training. Good luck. |
