Hello OKHTF,
My wife and I are moving from Georgia, and will be arriving in Lawton tomorrow (Sunday). I just wanted to introduce myself and say hello to you all.
So, what do I need to know about this fine state? Blackeagle05 |
|
welcome to my great state.
as OKHT traditions require that all newb's must furnish one case of ammo to the first OKHT member to ask, and I'm the first like Sly stated, it's hot, but not completely untollerable, plenty of lakes to enjoy, bars to cruise & drunk, desparate and horny women to chase. |

Yeah, I have lived in GA my whole life, grew up with ~100 degree summers. Recently I've been training for morning PT by running at 1430 or so, so that it's 95ish. Hopefully I'll survive the heat. |

Yeh...watch out for skunk-apes and black panthers when out in the woods.. ![]() He left out the alien abductions.
Nden will tell you there are usually 5 or 6 aliens and they'll be in a 1967 Buick. They don't mess with him anymore cuz he kept asking them if they had any sisters they would introduce him too.
I ain't come across them yet. Probably cuz they are hanging out at the truck stop with patrickcudd and rat, the two perverts in the OK HTF. |

It was first called that by the early settlers on the east coast and carries through to this day. It's a synonym also for "woolie booger". You know all about those I'm sure. |

You know all about those I'm sure. woolie boogers are good fish bait, rank right there with june bugs and katopia{sp?} worms. as for bigfoot/boogieman, it's like hanabil then, the old roman saying "be good children, because hanabil is at the gate"
ETA: thinking about it, I think katopia worms are called woolie boogers[shrug] |

Brother L, you are a man after my own heart. Catalpa worms I believe are what you mean. They damn sure are good bait. June bugs and grasshoppers are too. One time when I was a kid I caught a 12 lb channel cat off a grasshopper fishing at night on Ft. Cobb Lake. My family, uncles, aunts, cousins, etc, were camped there with my parents. All the men were down there looking at the catfish. The next thing I knew several of my cousins and uncles were in the tall grass with flashlights looking for grasshoppers. The ranger came by and thought something was wrong. Dad said he got a funny look in his face when he was told they were looking for grasshoppers to fish for catfish. He came down and had me pull the stringer up to see the catfish, then left. They did get some grasshoppers and did catch some more catfish that night but nothing to match that 12 lber!
I've used catalpa worms for bass in ponds and even in lakes. The bass snarf them up pretty fast. Never caught anything but perch on June bugs. Bass for some reason never hit them for me. ETA To the OP - do you know what thread drift is? If you don't, you soon will if you hang out here! |

I do know we got them out of fruit and pecan trees, Goddamned fish eat'em like a fat kid eats candy. passed by denver corner friday evening, couple of dudes had a huge stringer of cats, caught them on jugs using cut shad/perch, biggest one went in the 40#+ range, smallest was maybe 1#-1 1/2#, good catch either way, me I'd of thrown'em back, I don't care for cat fish, seems to me everytime I eat cat fish I get a piece that taste like dirt. perch, crappie and saugeye are more to my tastes; don't get me wrong though, I do like catching cats, but hell I like catching any fish that fights, I like catching drum, carp, bass (all varieties), gar etc, I don't like eating them either; strictly catch and release. I've used all kinds of bait, dough, punch, blood, liver, crawdads, grasshoppers, june bugs, bubblegum, hotdogs, chicken skin, shad, perch, minnows, worms etc; fucking catfish will eat anything that don't eat it. |

... I don't care for cat fish, seems to me everytime I eat cat fish I get a piece that taste like dirt... When I ran jugs, trot lines, and snag lines when I was younger, we'd hang the big cats from a chain between trees and cut off their tails to bleed them. I trimmed a lot of yellow fat off of them before I'd start filleting them after skinning them. Yeah, I know what you mean about a "dirt" taste in them. I can tell a difference between a pond raised cat, river cat, and lake cat, especially when then come from a lake like DirtyBird. Clean water does make a big difference. I noticed a lot of birds on the shores of Lake Hefner going to church yesterday afternoon. The water must be getting short on oxygen and the fish hitting shallow water for more oxygen. The birds are probably chowing down on the small one. Any cats you catch now won't be deep, but shallow most likely and won't taste too good.

I will be the good guy and get the OP thread back on rail––––––––––––––what a good guy I am Now welcome to the OKHTF. Be ready to have a giant blast furnace hit you from the moment you get here until November, and then the first ice storm will be late November. Also, stay hydrated, I know you mentioned running and PT in 95 degree weather but we are like at 40 days out of the last 50 days in 100+ degree weather. As to the ammo deal, don't worry because no newb has ever paid up that I know of. The old guys that can be grumpy, that is true but some of us of us mid-timers can too, hell even the young ones cane get a 'tude now and then. Just remember the Chicken Man, UFO's, and Mountain Lions exist with an open season on all |
