Check with your county Sheriff's department and see if they have a reserve unit.  Some may also call this a special deputy unit or posse.

Thanks for the suggestions but the same word keeps coming up "BUDGET" and its keeping alot of people back. also the self sponsorship program in Ohio since every middle class male 21-25 seems to want to be a cop. 100 new recruits every 6 months is pretty lame.

Been an LE for quite a few years and I'll keep my comments to myself in regards to specials but to be fair if your a new LE and its lame with 100 new every 6 months it's like the pot calling the kettle black.

Well said and I have taken that into consideration about choosing this career for my self whether or not I see myself doing this in 10 or 20 years. I know that I will make a good LEO because I have taken the time to decide that I want to be that guy at 2 am on Christmas Eve keeping the drunks and scum off the streets. It's tough when there are people out there that only want to do it cuz it seems fun or cool or exciting, but they get a better look because they can test higher. One day soon I will be able to start my career and make a life out of it for myself and my family.

Special skills? Education beyond the basic police academy? Enjoy doing the work no one else wants to? Keep looking, keep calling, keep showing up, make them aware you're looking. Provide detailed resume. Are you up to date on your training? A lot goes into "hiring" a reserve. It's just not jumping in a car and making arrests/vehicle stops all night. Know any FTO's? You're right no one bacame a LEO to work the hours or miss every holiday with your family. TRY no to be jaded, it gets you no where. Also don't believe every department wants what's best for you.

Good luck.
