At the cable place they were amazed the modem was from 2006.  The new modem is really fast with Wifi is built in.    Technology, go figure.

They were probably amazed since it hadn't broke yet.

At least that's what I get from charter sometimes.

When buying a new modem, I'd stick with Motorola, and nothing docsis 2.0 or below. Always go 3.0 if you have a choice. If you see any equipment labeled Arris, HITRON, or SMC, run the fuck away because they're gonna break within about 20 seconds.

Typically it is better to go with a modem, and a router instead of a modem/router gateway, as that brings its own complications, and smashing all the internals together makes for a shitty wireless experience with poor range.

Motorola SB6141 (8 bonded downstream channels, 4 up), and a dual band gigabit router are the best options out there at the moment.

This is all from my experience, so take it with a grain of salt, but I do work tech support for an ISP.
