Is the sound on the motherboard? Did you install the manufacturer's driver?

See, if you'd bought a Mac....

I just slapped together a new system too.
AMD Phenom 9500, 4 gigs of ram, 750 HD and a 512 meg vid card.

puts my 5 year old system to shame, and a pretty cheap build.

For my home network, I bought a small NAS box (that's "network attached storage") that has 3 500 GB drives in a RAID5 array for 1 TB of SAFE storage for my home videos (Sony HD camcorder), pictures, music, ripped DVD movies, data, etc.  Since it is on my home network, it can be used by all of the computers in the house, including the Sony PS3.  It is very cool!

Yeah I feel the same way, it's interesting my first 486 back in the early 90s cost about $3k I think.  Had 4 megs of Ram, and I believe it had a 40meg hard drive.  It was the Bomb in 1992...
Hell I've got a 250gig HD that fits in my palm, and a 12gig Thumb drive...  it's loopy.

Then I build this monster with 8 gigs, Vista 64, a Terabyte Drive, a 300Gig fast drive, a 500Gig scratch disk, and others adding up to about 2.4 Terebytes of storage in a home PC...   2 Gig Video Card, yadda yadda...  About $3k with a 27" monitor.
Crazy.

Found out that I really enjoy building PC's...

Pretty much all Newegg.com, about 500 bucks after a few rebates, and a copy of Vista Premium from a Soda Factory employee (no, not that one.)

+1.

My 286 had a 40Mb drive because it was the biggest I could afford.

See, if you'd bought a Mac.... You could have paid DOUBLE for the same specs, and not be able to UPGRADE in a few years with out overpaying for parts on eBay, therefore you would be OVERPAYING again for a whole new machine!!
