Hello all. I wondered if you could give me a bit of advice.

I recently picked up a second hand Southern Gun Company Speedmaster in .223.  I intend to use it for fox and range shooting. There were no manuals with the gun so I've been hunting around on the net for some info, that's how I came to be here! The fore grip is 12" long and I assume, from the information I could find, that it's free floating, it just screws into the upper receiver housing. Could anyone a) confirm that it is a free floating system and b) recommend a good replacement rail system that I could replace this with.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Andy and welcome,
Yes it is indeed a free floated tube, Some of the other lads on here will reccommend a better rail system for it. It is a very accurate rifle by the way as i had one myself.

Welcome aboard Andy

All new members are supposed to come bearing gifts. What did you bring us?

Most of the rail systems are pretty good, so it's just down to personal prefernces, and what you can get your hands on.
I had Yankee Hill tubes but traded them for Daniel Defense which I really like, especially as they're about the lightest.
Larue are better finished than DD's and then there's the Samson, Knights (Pricey), ARMS, Vltor and Surefire systems.
There are others but these are the main players.

Getting hold of them can prove problematic though.

Welcome Andy

Good choice of rifle, your lucky you got a second hand one, it can be a bit of a wait if you order a new one

You will find most of the info you need somewhere on this site, theres lots of informed people here.

Thanks for the welcome and the info.

I didn't actually go out of my way to get the Speedmaster. I went into my local gun shop as I had a slot on my license for a 223 and wanted something for mainly fox shooting. As it happened there was the second hand speedmaster on the rack. I had a look at it and really liked it. It's just done one season of range shooting as the previous owner died, so his family have disposed of it. Apparently it's got a match barrel and they think a match trigger. The shop wasn't sure what had been done to the trigger only that it wasn't standard. The barrel has what I'd call an extender piece on it to make it slightly longer. This was a bit of a pain as I've got a moderator for it and when it was screwed on it took the extender piece with it, so I had a shortened barrel without the moderator! I sorted that out with a bit of thread lock.

One thing I have noticed is that when the mussle break is fitted it sits offset. I'm not sure what to do about that or is it ok?

I decided that I'd like to do some range shooting and found out that there is a club locally that shoot at two of the army ranges nearby. I've made contact with them so hopefully I can get shooting pretty quickly.

I'll have a look at the different rail systems now that I know exactly what i've got.

As for bearing gifts - isn't my delightful presence enough

Your presence will be enough for some of us, but I prefer the money type of gift

Anyway, welcome aboard.

An off set muzzle break can be made to sit square with some form of indexing piece. This can be a peel or crush washer or, if it has to come off regularly, a spring washer. IM me if you want one.

Is it really a muzzle break or flash hider? I know many flashhiders get called muzzle breaks, but they're not, and they don't really matter if they're slightly off set. But on the Speedmaster it most likely is a muzzle break and it can be sorted if it's a problem.

Sounds like he's got a SGC muzzle brake, and if that's the case, a 5/8" thread, so nogo on the spring washer

What ranges do you shoot at Andy?

None at the moment as I've only just made contact with my local club. I haven't actually met them yet. I believe they use Hythe and Lydd in Kent.

As for the brake I'll try and put up a couple of pics. Stupid question but how do I put up pictures?

Cheers

Use one of the free hosting services like www.putfile.com of www.tinypic.com then past the url code into your next message

You need to host them, I use photobucket, It's a free service, sign up and then download your pics to photobucket and then highlight  the URL and right click copy on the photo you want to post, then when posting a message on AR15.com click on the box at the bottom of the message box entitled add image, You will then get a box in the top left hand corner, Then highlight it and press ctrl and V on your key pad which will paste the URL in the box and hey presto!

Yep,
That's the Bennie Cooley Muzzle Brake from Southern Gun c/w 5/8" thread.
It looks like someone has shortened that barrel to 16" at some point, then realised that the Reflex can wouldn't fit so they've had a spacer made to extend the barrel

Bizzarest thing I've seen
Not a bad looking gun otherwise. I see it has a stock extender.

Thanks for the info. The stock fits me really well so I'mleaving the extender in. Do you thin that I need to do something about the angle of the brake? I've only shot it with the can on so far just to get a feel for it.

Well I would if I was you. Apart from not looking right, it won't work properly.

Cheers. I'll drop into the gun shop and see what can be done.

Removing a small amount off the back of the break will allow it to line up better.

The problem you'll have is every time you remove it to put on the moderator, when you replace the break it'll line up to a slightly different point. How about getting one made that doesn't need indexing, such as a thread protector, and lose the break all together?

Just a thought, but if you had a shorter handguard, you probably wouldn't need the extender.

And does the brake index correctly if fitted directly to the barrel?  it seems you are losing the pointability of a 16" barrel by adding the extender

Mark, how much shorter is the DD rail ?

The short DD rail is 7" compared to the 12" of the standard one. That would give an extra 5" to play with. How long is the extender piece?

The extender piece is 3" long. Unfortunately the brake doesn't sit right on the normal barrel either.

Just another thought, the scope could be moved alot further forward, eyepiece level with end of the rail.  Lose the butt extension unless you are 6' 6" .  I assume previous owner had problems with eye relief with the scope set that far back.
