One of the guys I work with headed down Friday to his in-laws to go hunting with them....He wanted to know why they told him to wear Carhartts.

I just got back in. Wasn't too crazy out there in the state forest I was in. I only almost got shot once. I nearly got a shot on a buck, but he moved behind a tree and disappeared. They are sneaky like that. I like it later in the season anyway. I had one guy slide up next to where I was sitting at about 10:30 a.m. and he had no clue I was there. He was only about 50 yards away and then he gets on his radio and calls his buddy, who walked to meet up with him right through the draw I was hunting. I had been sitting in that spot since 4:30 a.m. too. It seemed like every time anyone shot at a deer that I could hear, they fired three to four rounds. The guy who came up next to me had been about 100 yards further out I'm guessing. He shot at two does and missed about an hour before he scampered over to the edge of the draw. I must have been right in his line of fire because the does ran downhill in between me and where I think he was. I still like the spot I hunt. I got a buck there last year and there is crazy deer sign everywhere.

In stand at 5:30 this morning, saw nothing for the next three and a half hours. Four doe ran the field across from me around 9, but way too far to take a shot. 10:10, a flicker in the woods drew my eye (another damn squirrel?) to the nice size eight-point walking towards me. Limping a little bit, but moving diagonally towards me. Waited for a clear shot, and at 60 yards (ballpark) I dropped the hammer on a CopperSolid ... and missed. He jumped and moved about fifteen feet forward, then stopped, screened by some pine branches. I decided to take a chance and shot through the branches...

He dropped and started thrashing; I quick-time climbed down and walked to him, where I put two rounds from the .44 into his chest ... waited a few minutes and he was still fighting, so I put one more .44 in, and that finished him.

Ballpark 200lb on the hoof, 8 points, but probably only a 100- or 110-class - spindly rack, not real symmetrical. That's ok, can't eat antlers!

ETA: Any suggestions for reasonable-price taxidermists in Central NY/Fingerlakes area to do a European Mount?

Went out and saw a bunch of doe and a spike buck. Nothing worth shooting at. Doubt I'll get another chance to get out. Good luck ARFCOMers!

No pics but after about 8 years of passing does and shooting Bucks only I shot a large doe at 0710 this morning. 30 yds in the heart, ran 15 yards and nosedived. Saw 2 bucks in the brush but no ethical shots.

Went out sat for 4.5 hours in one stand and another hour or so in another...

I got beat mentally today...it sounded like a war zone in 3 of 4 directions and I never saw movement.  Even a little "no shot" movement would have been nice.  Lots of friendly gray's and wood peckers though.

But from the sounds of the Saiga 12 ROF around me, some folks were trying hard to take all they could.  Not a surprise in the area, but its the only private area I've got to work with.

Unless something spectacular happens in two weeks, I'll be chalking another bust year on the board.

It was getting late in the afternoon, so I took a shot at this crazy little doe that was running circles in front of me.  She was quartering away very steeply, but my shot was true when she finally slowed down enough for me to get her.  The slug hit her in the left lung, got her heart, and exited just in front of the right shoulder.
My Ithaca 37 featherlight 20 ga. is 4 for 4!

For a European mount, I recommend Derek Noffey, in Liverpool.  He did my 7 pointer from last year, and I was very happy.  He has a converted chest freezer with a heater and fan, and dermestid beetles.  His DBA is "Bare Bones, (315) 345-3121.

Hey, 41magluva, thanks for the tip!

I'll have to look into it; still not 100% sure I want to cough up for a mount on this but at the same time it seems like a waste of a 8 point not to!

Did that doe bark when you shot her?

Yeah, well, I'll be able to cut the steaks with a spoon.  And I didn't have to break a sweat during the drag out of the woods.

July is coming.  How many jello shots do you think we need to make this year?

First shot on opening day here and first time hunting in 5 years I got a deer with antlers. Saw him at 6:30. He was feeding about 30 yards south of my stand. Official sunrise was about 6:53 or 6:54 AM so I took him at 6:55. It was still low light but scope helped. He was walking north straight towards my stand at 10 yards. Could not get a broad shot and didn't want to lose him so I shot for the spine. Hit him hard and he went down on the spot. I was using Rem. 710 ADL with core-lokt 150 gr. It'll be the last time I take a spike on this land. My brother and his friends have their own management plan for this land and it's worked perfect. I was exempt because I never got an antlered buck.

Congrats to all of you who have harvested  so far.

We hunt literally across the gorge from the original Remington forge, and had shots on either sides of us, but didn't see any ourselves.

The next door neighbor shot a 7 pointer east of us about 7AM.

The buck dressed out at 160lbs, and was shot about 600 yards from where we were sitting.

Out at 0530 again and at 0930 a buck was sniffing the scrape drip that I had out. That was the last he can remember, the scent of estrus. 25 yds, double lunger, 15 yds run and piled up. 8 pointer but not big to have mounted.

Getting up early is for suckas.
I woke up and spent the morning with the family.  Corned beef hash, eggs overeasy, wheat toast and coffee.  I hit the woods at about 11:30 and sat next to the end of a long marshy swamp.  Two doe came out, one went back in.  30 yard shot with my Smith and Wesson 657 Mountain Gun.  She was hung, and weighed in at 130 lbs at the butcher's.

Congratulations to all.

I took a big doe today. First time out with the RRA 6.8 but not the last. We did see one buck but only a 4 pointer and not legal to shoot here.

Hunted Sat and Sunday at my Uncles place near Oneonta only thing I saw was a scrawny little button buck and a coyote I couldn't get a shot on.  Will have to wait till after Turkey Day before I will be able to get out again.

Congrats to all the successful members!

2nd time ever in the woods. Hunting private property, had 4 does walk past my stand at 40yds. I sighted the largest but decided to pass. I want my 1st deer to be a buck. Watched them graze a bit, then walk off. I was hoping Mr. Buck would make an appearance but he never did. Sunday, spent more time in the stand to no avail. Nothing spotted besides a lot of birds. Had a nice fat squirrel in the crosshairs about 100 yds away. Hell, I needed SOMETHING to look at. Lil' fella had no clue he was marked...lol

I may try to get out again on this piece of property near season end. I'd like to have some snow on the ground.

Sneaky deer are always seen on my way home after dark , then I hear they're coming out earlier in the afternoon.  2pm isn't early enough, apparently; I'm going to have to get out there at 10am and change my spots.

Opening weekend sucked for me.
Saw NOTHING on Sat until near darkness when a doe showed up.No shot taken

On Sunday, I saw 2 does -on my way to my stand- which quickly ran away without a chance for a shot

Monday, I idn't go out, but will go tomorrow and see if I have better luck

Same here.  Dad missed a spike when he was scanning at 50-100 yards and it ninja'd its way 5 feet in front of him.  Couldn't take the snap shot in time.  I'm heading back up to Steuben this weekend for another shot.

Monday (yesterday), got a 100lb Doe at around 8:20 AM.

50 yards, using Saiga 12 with Federal Truball Slugs.

Deer didn't want to die or run, so I walked up and finished her from 5 yards with a shot below/behind the ear from my 10mm. That worked.

Dressed it out at home and had venison steaks for dinner.

The best was my 3 year old asking for seconds and third helpings of venison steak dinner.

We got 3 deer this year - I didnt pull the trigger on any of them though.

Beats what happened to my other friends hunting at a rental cabin/property in Ulster county.
They got RAIDED by 4 game wardens with a search warrant. Looking for baiting and illegal harvest. Imagine 3 ECO's walking circles around your stand looking for corn and apples. They were there for 4 hours!!  Didnt find anything but busted the 3 other people on the adjacent property.

ya know I didn't notice or truthfully look  for ticks on the deer we cut up.....It was warm outside, so from field dressing to in the freezer was <3 hours.
