I need advice on what to do with an older dog.
My Jack Russell is almost 14 yeas old, and can no longer make it through a work day without urinating in the house. It is causing me to just about lose where I am living, Except for an occasional limp caused jointly by arthritis and some tissue/muscle damage from a losing fight with a Great Dane a few years go, she is good health for her age. It's gotten to the point that I can no longer keep her. I hate to have her put down, since she is in good health, but also know that she is not adoptable from a rescue group due to her age. Any suggestions or ideas on what to do? Adam |

She was already at the vet a few times. Initially she had a bladder infection, but after it was cleared up, the urination issue did not go away. I have received an ultimatum where I live, that either she goes this weekend, or I go. Speak to them about using a kennel crate for her with the large pad that way there will be no more accidents other then in her crate. I had a dog that had seizures, so when we were not home she had to be crated in case she had one because the seizure would cause her to lose control of her bladder. Also for a dog that small, she is not really old yet. She shouldn't be having an issue with holding it all day. Can you change her routine, like walking her in the morning and put her water on a timer so she doesn't get any until later in the day? Our female Lab is 16 and she can wait all day until we get home. Have you spoken to more then one vet about the issue? |

Maybe the vet didn't completely clear her....... I just spoke with a vet tech, who said that something is "abnormal" on her kidney/bladder/urinary tract xrays they took two weeks ago, but she was vey nonspecific. She is going to have the doctor call me in a little while.

Medical issues aside, the crate and pee-pad solves the problem.
Our now departed little buddy wore a diaper the last year or so of his life. We bought adult diapers/pads from Walmart and he would soil them almost daily... but it worked and he still had the freedom to roam the house with the other dogs.

You owe that dog a lifetime of love, not an early death because you are inconvenienced. Sad. I would likely tell the person delivering the "ultimatum" to go fuck themselves, and leave with the dog. Best wishes for the dog. This! We put ours in the bathroom so if they have an accident it's not messing anything ip. |
| I too have a 14-year old Jack Russell. She has been a part of our family since she was 12 weeks old and she will die of old age in her bed, on my couch or wherever she falls over in our house. She will live out her life with us. I'd tell whoever is giving the ultimatum to fuck off. |
| We have an older girl that cant hold her pee. We give her a few syringes of D-Mannose Powder powder, Its like sugar water but helps with Urinary problems. It helps and we use washable diapers that we line with a maxi pad in them for when she cant hold it. It works pretty good! |

You took her to love and care for... you can't give her away she will no be able to adjust and cope with it. Also why even consider putting her down ?????? Who is telling you to get out and why? Sounds to me like they need to go piss up a rope! Help her out diapers and puppy pads ? Where do you stay maybe a dog door? And I have a Jack Russell too he is part English parsons and part American Russell he is 5 he's got more energy than the Hoover damn but I love him like a child we will be together till the end. |

Giving the dog away at this age would almost be tantamount to putting her down. You would break her heart. But yes, it's better than the death penalty.
I would consider going to another vet for another exam and second opinion. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Virginia Toles just outside of Cobb in Paulding. 8774 Dallas Acworth Hwy, Dallas, GA 30132 (770) 917-1776 She is TOP FLIGHT, cares and doesn't charge a lot to do a lot. She's been known to not put dogs down when the owners are clearly pigs and recommend putting dogs down for silly reasons because they never cared (I'm not saying that about you) in the first place. DR Clay leathers is the real deal as well http://newhopeanimalhospital.org/team/dr-clay-leathers/ Either will probably have an alternative for you. Getting a large crate with the pads as someone else recommended is a good interim solution. Monitoring water intake may be an option but can be tricky because generally, dogs need lots of water. Also look at her diet too. Too much protein in these "high protein" diets is NOT good for most dogs and adversely effect their kidneys. High protein diets are only needed for working dogs like Police K9's. GRAAAADUALLY switch foods if you are. PM me and I can recommend a quality feed or two. Most of all, pray about it. Ask for the Lord to guide you and help you to have mercy on your little friend and to protect you both from that meanspirited person. Ask him to shield you all and "put you in a secret place" Psalms 91. And call on the ONE NAME above all names because he is still the waymaker and can make a way out of no way. Jesus Christ. You've tried everything else...now try reading the Lords word about protecting you Best of luck and blessings |
