I am planning an over night backpacking trip through the Monongahela National Forest. Is it permissible to carry a shotgun in a scabbard for personal protection while hiking?
Thanks |
I have hiked the Mon numerous times, Hell I know it like the back of my hand, and hell, I live on the edge of it, so it's like my backyard. I agree with the above. Now, you probably won't see a damn sole out there, unless your going to Dollys sods or one of the popular places, that all the DC hippies go to, but a handgun is the better option. To be honest 44mag would IMO be overkill, and unneeded weight. Hell, I normally carry a 9mm, or a .38special. 2 legged predators, and bear would be the biggest thing, coyotes on a very rare ocasion. Sasquatch is pretty friendly in these parts so you'll be fine there

You might run into some trouble with the DNR laws with that one, since you would be "afield with a loaded hunting configured fire arm", you might want to stay clear of that one. This. Just buy a S&W 500. That will cover everything from a opossum to a gorilla wearing body armour. Joking aside I never hike without some sort of firearm. People call me crazy. About 10 years ago while hiking I came across a small turtle I was going to keep, bent down to pick it up and when I did I noticed a bear cub about 5 feet from me running around in circles yelping, I figured it was hurt and took a few steps towards it about that time it's mom came running up the bank after it. Mom stopped and stood right up on both legs to look at me. I nearly shit and legitimately thought I was about to check out in a really shitty way. They both ran off. So yeah carry something man it can happen. |
