I posted a while ago on the subject of a AR15 L/H options, but am still undecided.

I managed to try a SGC based rifle which seemed fine, but the position of the LH cocking lever was too far forward to be truly comfortable. I stumbled on a review of this action and it would appear that it could be made to accept a modified cocking handle on either left or right sides of the upper. http://www.702shooter.com/precision-rifle-raffle/lar-grizzly-ops4-upper-receiver-review/

Are these uppers available? Does anyone have any thoughts on the subject, I'd appreciate any advice, thanks guys.

Are they available? Yes - if you can find an exporter, pay the costs, and wait (probably a long time)!! What does it gain you? Nothing, as the handle is still too far forward...

What's wrong with the L/H cocking conversion of a standard upper receiver - slot in the wrong side and a cocking handle the reverse of a a normal RH one fitted?

That would be the way I would go.

BusPassWarrior has one.

By the way has anyone seen BPW lately.... I don't recall seeing him post lately.

Thank God for that. The last time I heard he had a couple of ladies in tow.  Thought he may be handcuffed naked to a bed somewhere being used by a couple of 60 year old nymphomaniacs

Is that cocking handle not the same distance forward as the one you have?

It looks a bit like a full bore V22

It just struck me that it would be relatively easy to make an extended cocking handle for either left or right hand use, without having to mill the upper.

I realise that the bolt would have to be modified accordingly but as such the rifle could be used with a right or left handed primary extended cocking handle with a secondary on the other side.

I'm still around, read much, post little.

OP is correct the left hand cocking handle on the SGC is too far forward but I copied Mr Beard and had a modified handle made which fits in the slide.  I've now sold on the SGC AR but still have the special cocking handle.  My current AR was made by our very own gun plumber who left the right hand side intact and machined out the left.

"custom made" cocking handle fitted into slide of SGC AR

The gun plumber's masterpiece

Any questions?

Seen you shoot that Dave, but didn't realise it was moded in that way, I thought it was like SGC's left hand upper, that's a nice job no doubt

Thanks
I haven't done that many, but there's probably about half a dozen or so sneaking about out there.

They're every bit as good as the right handed ones.

Of course, there are certain people who say that it can't be done and that they will break...............

No reason it should break as a straight pull. There's no shock load on the upper

there is a chance of catching your fingers
on the bolt release, a slightly modified BAD lever may be worth a look

You don't need the bolt release when the charging handle does the same thing.

BAD would only work for a right handed shooter

I know that....but a certain person said they had done that (on the right) and they kept breaking, so that's why they went for the thick alled extruded ones that are fitted to a rivals rifles.

I will say that I have converted in the region of 150+ without any issues

Yep! you only use the bolt release once, the cocking handle goes forward a bit smartish The main use of the bolt release is more of a bolt lock back, you will see I have one with a downwards extension. I can then reach round with the right hand while pulling the bolt back with left.

Did I mention I'm actually right handed?

You'd know all about that, now, wouldn't you.

Any material you remove from the upper will weaken it to some degree but will it weaken it enough to make it break in normal use?
Mine is still in one piece - for now.

ETA: I use my left side charger for highpower where I have to shoot single shots for the slow fire stages. You only catch your finger once (or possibly twice) and you learn to use the top of the finger only to release bolt group, it's close but I can still count to ten.
