Hey all, Ive been searching for a link to the Oregon firearms laws regarding handguns.  I remember reading that it was illegal to purchase a handgun if under age 21, but if a parent or guardian gave you the handgun you could own it and shoot it.  I'll be coming back to school this year and was pretty much just wondering on teh legality of my dad transferring a glock 22 and a springfield operator to me once we got across state lines so that I could shoot them throughout the year.  Does anyone have any links to info about this?  Thanks in advance

I'll help a little more:

www.leg.state.or.us/ors/166.html

Start at 166.170 and go from there.

I think 166.250 is what you're looking for.

This is a federal law, I believe.

but if a parent or guardian gave you the handgun you could own it

NO

and shoot it.

yes.  But here is where I'd have to go back and study:  Do you have to be supervised while shooting? I thought I remembered something about written permission....

Edited to add:

I take it back.  I see nothing in the Oregon Law to prevent a person between 18 and 20 years old from possessing a handgun.

I did some searching and found this:

Federal law prohibits possession of a handgun by anyone under 18, but some states have established higher or lower age limits. For example, Montana has set the minimum age for handgun possession at 14. There is no federal minimum age for possession of a long gun (rifle or shotgun). Licensed dealers (FFLs) are prohibited from selling handguns to people under 21, and long guns to people under 18. Unlicensed sellers may not sell handguns to people under 18, but there is no federal minimum age for buyers of rifles or shotguns.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like a person between 18 and 20 years old can acquire a handgun from a non-licensed seller.  It seems to me that Oregon law allows that person to own and shoot that firearm as well.

That's my interpretation too.

In Oregon, someone between 18-20 can legally own a handgun, and can legally purchase a handgun - just not from a licensed dealer, since the feds prohibit licensed dealers from selling a handgun to anyone under the age of 21.

Neither Oregon, nor the feds, have any prohibition/restriction from someone aged 18-20 owning the handgun that I've seen, nor have I found any prohibition/restriction on it's purchase, save from an FFL.
