Did you all see the guy on the Outdoor channel crawling through the mud with a M1. When he tried to fire it he had miss fires. I forget the show, one of the defensive shows they air. He mentioned that "All you AR15.com'ers are probably laughing at me. Why would anyone want to try and "demonstrate" crawling through the mud with a M1. Besides, if the end of the world happens, I'm grabbing my AK.

It was on Guns and Ammo TV. The firearm in question was a Springfield INC M1A "commercial Semi M14 Clone" not a Garand. Guy's name is Richard Vanola, he's one of the Editors. The torture tests they perform on that show are pretty silly. He was simulating crawling thru the swamp in Nam, lol. These tests make for entertaining television but do not tell you how a given firearm will perform in the field. Once they grilled an XD pistol to show that it would work after being exposed to extreme temperatures. Whether on not a real M14 would have performed better I do not know. However as the Garand type designs use an open top receiver it's easy to get foreign matter in the action. They're usually very reliable thanks to the piston and slightly generous clearance of the internal parts. However an AR-15 or AK-47 with their dust covers and closed receivers design keep most gunk out of the action and tend to fare better is these instances. FYI AK's copy much of it's mechanism from the M1. Check out this Youtube video of Eugene Stoner demonstrating the original AR-10. It fares very well in this mud test. youtube.com/watch?v=IWpghGNUASY&feature=related Not a bad show but Shooting USA, American Rifleman and Shooting Gallery are better in that order imho. I guess we all should be happy we have all these gun related shows to watch these days. for a long time anything gun related was gone from the TV. My dad said in the 60's shooting demonstrations were featured on variety shows ect on a fairly regular basis. |
