PC question for our resident PC techie… Windows 2000 Pro… getting a lot of people telling me to ditch it and get XP Pro, should I? Any advice appreciated. ANdy |

I went from Win98se to XP so the only thing I know about Win2000 is that whenever my old man used to ring me I could not help him coz Win2000 was missing a lot and was set up differently. Go get XP and if you are going to use a pukka version ....register it and update it to SP2Taffy |

Vito, What are you going to use the PC for? Windows 2000 Pro is a fantastic operating system, certainly in a business envirnoment, but Windows XP is also very very good these days. It's swings and roundabouts unless you have a specific need which fits in with the XP way of working. What'cha gonna use it for? Dave |
I ain't talking to you, you've moved to Texas!!!! ……I will be using it to run a planetrium programme, telescope remote control programme and some image stacking and enhancement software, plus uploading stuff to my Pocket PC. Number crunching basically… ANdy |
Yes we do, He's called Bunnyassassin, but he doesn't have sticky out ears

Texan? Danish I tell you ;-) I'd say go with XP, Pro for networking and dual CPU, and home for general use, the extra features and driver cache over 2K are very useful for the average home user, and it will certainly make it more mac like for it's plug and play-ness. You probably don't need XP pro unless you are networking or sharing files, or intending to. Dave (I normally wouldnt ever suggest home, as it is cut down as far as networking goes, but if you actually have to buy a copy.....) |
Second hand Compaq, 1.8Ghz P4, they are owned by HP now aren't they? Your a very nice man!

Excuuuuse me! GEEK? Just because I know a thing or two more than your average "eejit", that in no way qualifies me for the "geek" tab! Sure I built a rather cool PC from spare parts found in a skip (the one I have now), sure I can use my 2210 as more than an overpriced calculator or porn presentation unit (also useful when combined with a 1Gb Compact Flash card) ...................... but Geek! Nah

The geek does protest too much!

Hmmmm… he clearly is a 'geek… he understands the true purpose of all IT technology is it's utility for porn presentation and research. ANdy |
XP Home will be good to go.. It still does networking & sharing. It just can't join a domain type network, and it doesn't have the built in IIS webserver... neither of which is going to trouble you. |
....register it and update it to SP2
