If video existed that showed 4 identifiable youths trying to break into cars on a driveway would you expect the police to be interested in talking with the youths? I think it would make for a "teachable moment" don't have to accuse them of anything just show the kids and the parents the footage and go from there. Appears that the city I live in would rather deal with the little ass bags down the line.

Describe " trying to break into cars".

Yanking on door handles. Breaking into cars would not be correct for that would it? I guess trying to make entry might be better.

If they are identifiable does that mean you know them and know the parents or  the video has a clear shot of there face and they are not known?   Police departments are not run like they were even 20 or 30 years ago.    You have to ask how much time and effort would it take to hunt down and find out who they are then go talk to them about a crime that may or may not of happened.   Touching a car is not a crime.  Lifting a car handle may provide some PC.   The local PD may just not have the time or resources to find them?     Why dont you go ask the chief of the department and get an answer?   Just trying to be helpful.

From what I've been hearing lately it seems like many departments can barely be bothered to investigate actual thefts, let alone attempted thefts, especially by kids.  I suppose maybe the police don't have the resources or are tired of wasting their time if the juvenile justice system has a history of not doing anything even if they make arrests, etc...

If citizens want anything done about it it seems like they will have to start taking matters into their own hands.  I'm not suggesting vigilantism...  I am saying that maybe the parents of those kids might not like that video getting posted on YouTube, etc...  Or such video getting picked up by the local TV stations...  might shame the community into doing something if it got around enough.

They will not likely be interested in "teachable moments". They may be interested in narrowing down a suspect pool for actual burglaries.

Law Enforcement is not what it was 20-30 years ago...

Where I grew up if you were stupid - the neighborhood beat cop would usually
tune you up and then take you home where your father would continue...

Today - the parents would hold a press conference and then wait for a settlement check,,,,

Yeah, cops today have more respect for the constitution and an interest in actually solving some crimes instead of beating up kids, what a shame

Post the video online, print the vidcaps and post them around town.

Well at least we didn't have as many active shooter situations. Seems like back then you knew you'd get the wrath of your parents, instead of my baby din't do nuthin.

Teachable moments are for parents. It is part of raising children. Call the police if someone want an investigation, not a lecture.

A friend of mine(fellow student)was caught with some weed. School policy: one call, your folks or the fuzz. He chose the law, as would I, had it been me.
