the "p" in pwned stands for pistol. it originates from the computer game counter strike. in this game you play terrorists versus counter terrorists and you earn money by eliminating your opponents and use that money to buy better weapons. getting "pistol owned" was a huge insult especially if you have some sweet rifle (M4) or machine gun and your opponent uses a simple 1911 or glock 9mm to land a well placed shot to your head. pistol owned -> p-owned -> powned -> pwned -> pwnd also, pwn3d, pwnt. |
i've heard about the misspelling on the warcraft map, but the first place i ever heard it was back in my counterstrike days as pistol owned. |
It was being used in Quake II before that. And probably something else before that. It's just a typo that gained internet stardom. |
