The BATFE has classified it as a non flash suppressing device.  I just had one pinned & welded on my AR in MA.

How do you you deal with a post ban barrel with no threads? Can it be threaded, then install the break and pin and weld? Or is there a better way?

I really would like to put something on the end of the barrel to protect the crown.

Also what is the effect of this break? Does it generate a lot of back blast?

Yes. A smith with the right equipment can thread the barrel then pin the break to the end. Autoburst Tech in MA is one such shop I believe.
