| I have a buddy that farms on about 400 acres he leases and farms another 600 acres or so on a profit sharing type situation. He has a large deer herd that are a pest (he has seen at least 10 at once) that are eating and destroying crops including his winter wheat. Does anybody know offhand what the laws are? IIRC, it is no holds barred deer jihad, but I'm not sure of that. Can he designate anybody to help him kill the deer? Do those agents of his then have to have any sort of license? Do they have to follow hunting rules such as seasons, hours, equipment? I THINK I remember it being that they can designate people to hunt their land who then get to use rifles or whatever guns of their choice and not worry about seasons and limits and such. I'm not going to try it for this actual deer season, but if I could hunt his pests in december or january with any equipment I may take my 45-70 out and try to eradicate a few for him. If nobody knows I'll check the DNR site later, don't have time tonight. |

wildlifehotline.info/ Might be the place to start. coldfuse2.agriculture.purdue.edu/entm/wildlife/pdf/working_with_wildlife.pdf According to this, a hunting license is required during hunting season. Outside of season, a DNR Deer Control Permit is required. |

He can get a "deprevation" permit from the state/ DNR that will allow him to remove "x" amount of deer. The "x" is determined by acreage, county/ area, damages etc... a farm that we hunt has 15-20 "dep. permits" every year. I am not sure if its only out of season as this farmers permits are though..... June/ July timeframe. He needs to call the DNR and report the damages, and inquire about the deprevation program. HTH, P.S. (2) permits for my son and I will pay for the info. |
In season you still need tags and a license, and is limited to a smaller number of deer per county, the "dep. tags" allow alot more deer, out of season on the property. Some farmers dont like hunters, but they will bring them in on the dep. hunts in the summertime. |

Remember the sniper on Hwy 65, he was using a .270. He had been hunting that weekend at a farm nearby to remove pest deer, with that same .270.. That was the first time I had heard about being able to use rifles on deer under pest removal. Just do your homework. All the info is out there, just hit the Indiana DNR web site. |

That is completely wrong. If you hunt on another person's land, you have to buy tags just like you would on state property. If a landowner whose property can be considered a farm hunts on his own property, he does not have to buy tags but is still limited by the state bag limits. He is also required to check his deer in.
