I'm handing my permit paperwork in within the next two weeks. So my question is: I think I'll put a pistol on lay-a-way at the local gun shop and pay some on it here and there so that when my permit comes the gun will be paid for. Am I allowed to go to the gun store and touch a pistol since I'm 22 and currently don't have a permit. I know this is a pathetic questions but it is NYS after all. |
Ron, Thanks for the info. The dealer in Victor is who I was planning on going to. It's pretty pathetic when you can't even touch a pistol in NYS w/o a permit.

I do believe that you can pay for it and have it held until you get your permit? |
| I have a friend that did just what you are asking. The dealer wouldn't let him touch it but did let him put a deposit on the handgun. The day he picked up his permit is the same day he picked up his gun. Now for the problem. He wound up buying a tiny Glock that looked great in the case but turned out to be the wrong gun for his first purchase. If I were you I would use these next few months to make a big list of what interests you and keep plenty of space open to add more to the list. Then start reading everything about each one and start narrowing down the list. Why commit yourself to putting a deposit on a gun now when later this year your tastes change or a better model came out? Just my 2cents. |
I'm thinking of 1 of the 3 below: Glock 19 Sig P229 HK USPc (all in 9mm) I don't think a newer model comes out in these that changes significantly, at least not for the better. I'm leaning towards the Sig the most right now but the HK is a very close second. Looks like I'll just have to make a trip to PA. |
Not exactly true. You can request permission from your licensing agency for a pre-licensing exemption in the licensing law that allows you to live fire and receive training from an instructor at a range. You second option is just to take a trip to either PA, NH or VT and fondle or rent all the handguns you want. While you're there rent a MG if you can afford it. |

YEARS ago there was a shop in Nassau County that also had a range in the basement. While I was waiting for my permit to come in, they allowed me to purchase a gun and shoot it in their range. I couldn't take it home so they would lock it in their safe. Basically I would go to the shop, sign in, sign the gun out, shoot then sign gun back in and sign out. I was a kid and I went through them to get the permit...I believe this was one of the benefits of getting the permit through them. I'll never forget the feeling of taking that gun out of the shop the day I got my permit. It was a S&W 6906 btw. |
These were my EXACT same choices when I got my Suffolk permit a couple of years ago...in 9mm as well (I chose the HK). The day you get your permit and you're "allowed" to fondle all three will be one of the coolest days in your life....what a great feeling. |
all three of the above are quality arms. that said, if you go HK, i would go with a P2000 vs the USPc. the P2000 accepts the same mags, has slightly improved ergonomics, and has a standard weaponlight rail. of course, like the USPc the P2000 comes in several trigger/safety variants and you'll need to pick one. www.heckler-koch.de/HKWebText/detailProd/1925/116/4/21 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heckler_&_Koch_P2000 ar-jedi --> has G19 and P2000(LEM) |

hey Rich,, Also, maybe you can find a friend or two that have these same type pistols, and in the privacy of a secured (no big brother around) facility, you can handle the pistols, and maybe even shoot them, now I know what you are thinking,,,, I wouldn't suggest doing such unlawful acts,,,,,, but.............. Weapon choices? make it simple,,, and make sure you stress test the pistol,,, including it's safeties,,, small levers and buttons are real bad under stress,,, The glock 19 is awsome under stress, just for that reason, |
