tried to go shooting all three days of this weekend, but there was a large group camped out at the local pit, leaving no chance of getting any shooting done. so here is my question, is it rude to come to a local area from out of town, and completely take over the local pit and camp there so nobody can shoot but the group in control of the pit? just trying to get a feel as to how the pit etiquette goes.
Oh and to the group that is responsible for this, thanks for not letting me get some trigger time on my new scope, and working on some reloads! |

And you are blaming that group for not "getting some trigger time"? Have you heard of local ranges in Washington? Yes, you have to pay and help the local economy. |

Pay ranges are for Fudd's and city folk

Were they actually stopping you from shooting or just making it uncomfortable? they were intimidating to say the least, I pulled in there on Sun. morning 0800 and there was a line of cars parked to the side, out from between them comes someone with an ar hanging from his chest, looking like he was security, I just turned around and left. |

as far as the pay ranges goes, this pit is 20 minutes from my house, and I don't have any ranges in the area, If they think I should use the pay ranges then why can't they?
abviously they were from out of the local area as they were camping in the pit, I am sure there were more local people that frequent that pit that didn't get any shooting done this weekend either. |

Which pit?
Public property right? Payed for by everyone's taxes? Seems like first come first serve to me, whether local or out of town. Same really when it's on private property the owner allows the public to use. I guess everyone who goes to the LCR is rude since they take over the big pit even though many come from Seattle and farther. AR on someone's chest? Someone had a gun at a shooting location? Say it isn't so! |

If it's public property, then local means absolutely fucking nothing. Unless it's payed for by the locals of course, for their exclusive use. And posted. Why can't someone from 300 miles away use something that their tax dollars are already paying for? Maybe they are from the area and wanted to camp? Maybe they wanted to do some night firing and/or get an early start? Was it the only shooting area in your area? Sounds like your more rural, so you probably have more choices than those living in more urban areas... so you'd begrudge those (paying for the area you use mostly) their fun? If anything, that group has more right to the area since they most likely pay more in combined taxes to maintain that area than you and a couple other locals.. assuming it's public land. |

Things like this are why I avoid pits and other popular public outdoors shooting locations. Too much chance of safety problems, drama, substance abusers, idiots, or other things I didn't go out there for.
The percentage of times I have tried areas like pits and had various problems led me to the conclusion that the vast majority of the time, pits or other popular, public, outdoor areas lacking adequate supervision by a range officer are better avoided. About 80% of the time I run into scenarios like those posted in this thread. I gave up on those places long ago. Now I go either very far away where the areas aren't popular, or I go to private ranges. This way, I get to shoot every time I go out, and don't have to be looking over my shoulder to see if someone sets up 30 yards behind me to shoot. |
| I haven't been to a single pit here in Washington. I do have one outdoors area, but it is still a two hour drive to get there. Like most places, there are always some idiots trying to wreck it though. Last year a bunch of us who shoot there got two pickup truck loads of junk out of the area. |
| I don't see how they were yahoos. People went to a public area to shoot, and were there first. Big deal. It happens at pay ranges too. If you're local, then no big deal right? It's not like you just drove two hours to get there. Stop whining about public places and buy your own range if you want to be guaranteed to be able to shoot whenever you want. |

The AR hanging from the chest works damn near every time I have done it
and if its not intimidating enough I grab a bigger gun |
