We just signed up for the YMCA this past weekend and when I was setting my goals, thoughts of volunteering popped up again. 4x gear is...not cheap so I figure on checking it out once I'm comfortably back in '2x land'. Just wondering if I'd see some BFS' in the parking lot if I came out and if anyone had any personal insights or experiences they wanted to share.
Edit: SDF is not state sponsored in MO. I'm saying a civvie to avoid potential legal consequences. |
Don't hold back now.
Yeah that's kind of why I haven't checked them out with more than a web search just yet. "Hey, that guy has AT LEAST one AR platform rifle in his house" is something I'm kind of trying to avoid... Not doing too good a job so far, active membership @ ARFCOM isn't exactly flying way below the radar. LOL |

Are you joining the female militia? |

Are you joining the female militia? Nah, I'm just concerned that I'd be in the best physical shape there. Girl? Really? How can you tell? The usual identifiers are...absent. |

I'm from the GaryM militia... a militia of one!!! I considered joining up but I would prefer a militia where most members have prior military experience (to cut down on the heavy 6 wannabes). I have not heard "heavy 6" in awhile thanks for that. Ah crap I posted in the militia thread, they probably wont shoot the cat. Damn it |

Gary you are in a large group of former mil experience guys that wear uniforms. The post office seems to be about half former mil. |

I saw a few kids(prob 18-21 years old) dressed down in tiger stripe cammo with patches and stuff walk into Walmart a few nights ago. You could tell they thought they were the shit. I moved in for a closer look and they were some kind of milita. They had their shirt sleeves rolled and pressed and pant legs tucked into their boots. They looked almost like military personal except for the tigerstripe. Funny thing is that some people were looking at them like they were actual Army soldiers....others had a wtf look lol.
Yeah NO THANKS! Some groups used to set up at gunshows and talk about firearms training and disaster response and first aid training.i'm cool with that, but like already said i'm sure they have some politics I wouldn't want to be associated with. You can do those things and not have to be in a militia. I'm not talking smack on militas, but in todays world you are considered crazy for being apart of one. |

Disgruntled postal workers!!! |

Nope. Like you, I thought about it and realized that this is EXACTLY what I don't need. More scrutiny! I figure I am on enough watch lists now, I don't want to be at the head of the class in this case.
The day you joined AR15.com, BFL or not, I figure you hit a list. I can't run anymore, cept to the frig. I don't march worth a darn. Just ask my wife, I am always out of line and stepping on someone's toes. Nah, right after to boating accident, I ran down and bought a used shot gun. All I got left. And I just learned to shoot last week. |

Yeah, I have better things to do with my time than hang with the rump militia. Like get myself into better physical shape, round is just not as structurally sound as I should be.
Besides, until I am 65 I still fit Mr Mason's idea of a militia member, Act of 1903 or not. |

There were a couple of them at Anchorfest in Centralia.
Guy running the booth seemed to try too hard to be something he's not. The 2 other guys who were there didn't seem to want to do much more than wear bloused BDU pants and a Marine sleeve roll on their jackets. I was less than impressed. |

I got over playing 'army' as a kid. If we had something like the CD again, that'd be cool. I'm heading the way of getting my HAM license, attending armorers' courses and getting some carbine training. Those endeavors seem to fill what I was looking for. And, of course, being in some kind of shape besides 'round'. |

P90x or something along those lines will be where I go next. Now its more about just getting moving. ETA: title of topic has been updated. I have no interest in playing Army at 40. |

I've seen people do well with that p90x ,but they say its not for faith if heart. Me being an anemic sob, I gotta gain weight before I could do anything else. As for camo,I just turn sideways . ![]() Yep, I have some weight to drop before teh P90x gets started. It is gruling stuff, but once I get back down around 250 I'll be in better health and perhaps able to do it. I really just want to be able to move around better and not have to special order clothes. The monitary savings on my wardrobe will mean more money to spend on gun related stuff as well. |

Weight loss is 100% diet....I do not want to discourage you from becoming fitter at the same time but you cannot out work a shitty diet. Look at paleo/primal diets and here. Everything is debatable but it works,is easy, and no magic potions required.
p90x is sort of aimed at folks with some degree of fitness already....lots of it can be modified but probably some basic strength and cardio would be best for now. Free weights and running/jogging/biking will get you a long way. Have fun....its addicting |

Free weights and running/jogging/biking will get you a long way. Have fun....its addicting Great post. OP- I'll add swimming to the mix. And as you build muscle you may not see the results on the scale right away because muscle weighs more than fat. It also burns it. Here's a few quick eating tips that have worked for many folks. Eat every three hours. This speeds up your metabolism. For the next two weeks, eat slower. Take almost twice as long to eat. And, if you are sticking to a healty intake of food, allow yourself 2-3 meals to be "not so healthy". |
|
I have the muscle, it's just in stealth mode. Yep, altering my diet has helped and swimming will get more challenging as I get less bouant. My snack food has gone from chips to nuts and veggies with dried fruit added into the mix. I started my own thread in the SD/Excersize area. That along with my blog and family should help me stay on track. |

I tried to do the P90 about 18 months ago. I was mislead, and told to go as hard as you could. Now I've been told after 4 months of PT that I may need shoulder surgery. If you do it, do what you can and build up. I'm something of an over achiever and now I may have to go under the knife. |

I don't think I have much to worry about, his is all for me at my pace. It took me 20+ years to do this to myself and I have No illusions about it going away without a lot of effort. |

Any exercise you get will sure help but remember its all diet.
A little story for you....I have GAINED 50 pounds in the last 2.5 years even though I work out 4-6 time a week, eat right, drink less, etc. Now granted most of it was "good" weight gained the scale still went up because I was eating over my maintenance level. Now during that time I have had to trim the fat and loose weight a few times so that meant eating less food....mainly carbs...and keeping the intensity up as much as possible. So keep parking far away and going to the Y but you really need to work on what is going in your mouth....and do squats and deads |
