My Win XP shop computer started acting odd several weeks ago. It's been getting slower and slower. Website have also been having problems loading and it's been acting otherwise quirky.
I have ran AVG, Malwarebytes and CCleaner which didn't find any issues or improve performance. I just downloaded Avast and I'm going to see if it can locate any problems. TD |

Box up the PC. Sell it and buy a Mac. Problem fixed. puddin. Quoted:

Disconnect your computer from your LAN or wireless network. See if the performance speeds up. If so, your computer may be part of a bot-net, or is being used by someone as a upload/download point for movies, music, etc.
If your computer is still very sluggish even without connectivity to the Internet, try to defragment the harddrive. If that doesn't work, you should reload your OS. |

TD I'm not going to buy a MAC or drive a Prius MAC is not an option since my pawn software will not run on a MAC. I run defraggler a couple of times a month. The HD might shit-out tomorrow but it's not making any strange noises. Reloading isn't an option due to software and work related files. I guess I'm looking for a magic bullet to cure my problems which I somehow doubt exists. TD |

did you install the encryption software you were talking about? that could be causing the issues if it wasnt done properly. I did not install it due to the previously mentioned issues I started having soon after I looked into the encryption software. TD |

TD Do a Control atl delete and check how much ram in use ( 421 here out of 2 gigs in use ) and how many processes are in use ( I have 36 right now in use) . Also ditch AVG and get Avira virus software its free and much better. Plus get spybot search and destroy to find malware and trojens. |

I know this is overly simplistic, but have you deleted your cookies lately, then immediately rebooted? Occasionally this'll clear up the odd mal ware. Also, if you haven't rebooted your DSL modem and wireless network, sometimes that'll help too.
Bottom line though, NEVER allow your pawn computer to go online. I have always used a separate and distinct computer that is NOT hooked to the network nor the Internet in order to safeguard my pawn data. Best of luck, computer problems just plain suck...... ETA: Another thought occurs, is it possible that your wireless router has been hacked into? You might want to change the password in case a neighbor or two is eating up your bandwidth. |
| Just don't look at bitdefender...apparently the recent update for it detects every .exe as a virus and quarantines and deletes them |

| what r u doing when u notice the slowness? accessing the internet? typing a word document? when ur PC starts to crawl, look to see what process it is in task manager utilizing the CPU & Mem & go from there. if its not a process u need, stop it & prevent it from running in the future. where u located? may stop by if its not too far. |

Thats the good thing about "spybot search and destroy" it will detect it and show you exactly what you have.
here is a link, http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ load it ,update and scan. The above is supported by microsoft to. And as someone else said , use another pc online never the one you work on and make $$ with. This one that I acess the web is safe because there is no personal info on and do my work on another one that has no internet connection. If you have something like a "virtomonde" type malware the only way tp get rid of it is like "wipe drive" because anything other than that it will just change names and hard to find. That is the real way to get rid of that crap wipe drive and start over. Maybe clean you internet temp files, cookies might help to. here is a Avira link and its sooooooooooooo much better than AVG, http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html |

Why all the hate for AVG?
What exactly makes Avira better? Since both are free I am open trying a better AV program but want to know what make Avira better than AVG? TD... Sorry for the high jack FWIW, when my PC's started to slow down it was either the HD or the RAM starting to go bad. A PITA either way. Monk |

Monk I have used AVG for years on 1 pc plus used Avira on another Avira caught malware/Virus's many times AVG never even saw it. Maybe the pay version of AVG is better I dunno. Load them both like I did once and you will see that AVG does not see as much as Avira. After that if you have a problem which I hope you don't you will agree that the freeware Avira is MUCH better. |

EUsing Free REgistry Cleaner
I ran that when my home PC started slowing down. Cleared up a lot of the shit. Also try disconnecting it from the network. If it speeds up - then you probably have a malware type issue. |

Look what you ought to do is make sure all the files you need to run your business are backed up. Do you have all the files? Do you have all the software you need to run your business? Do you have all your software keys.
That is your 1st priority. NOT THE OS. That is disposable. And yes you can run your pawn software on a mac, either via a wine type emulator or via sandbox (vmware/parallels/virtualbox). Get your files & software safe 1st, then you can decon your machine. If you want some help, shoot me an email and I'll try to lend a hand. |
