I've got a Chinese 3K gas genny that is putting out 368v out the 220v & 174v out the 110v recipticle. I unknowingly cooked a GFI & power inverter on my travel trailer.
Can I fix this? Or who can fix this near the Monroe area?
Is it worth fixing? The engine starts easily and runs. Very clean.

Thanks in advance,
7mm

To my knowledge glockfan68 is the resident expert on generators. If he doesn't jump in here, IM him. He's good people, and I would 100% trust his opinion!

Other than that, I got nuttin'......

What brand is it? I heard champion has good customer service.

I don't understand how this can happen. I suppose the governor could be malfunctioning or got adjusted but I still can't imagine it going that high. Do you have a kill a watt?

I've always assume that they used some sort of crude DC voltage regulator to control the field winding voltage.
I suspect that regulator has failed.
Do a search for "voltage regulator" for your generators brand and model.

I could be wrong, but I believe the governor would control frequency, not voltage.

I fried a voltage regulator like this on a genny once.  I unknowingly shut it down while under heavy load and it fried the voltage regulator.  I just found the part number off mine and found a replacement online.  I think it cost about $30 and I was back in business.

Would a surge protector on your TT help? I'm thinking not but I have a pop-up with a generator and want to make sure I don't do this also...

Install a voltage gauge on it. Check the voltage before you plug anything in.

Maybe, but you'd need to fuse it properly. Most surge protectors do so by clamping the short voltage spikes, but an unregulated generator would output enough current to smoke it pretty quick. The only hope would be that the fuse blew before the protector melted. If they make one that actually opens the circuit on an over voltage, that would work.

Voltage regulator issue in my opinion. That was almost always the issue on any of the gensets I've worked on.
