OK, looks like she is here.
Otego,NY no power. Nice to have a genset. That is all. |

Power went out in Pine Bush around 4:00 am on Sunday morning. Most of the Village had power back yesterday. My road just got power back around 11:00 am today. The generator and Coleman stove got a workout, it was like camping in my own house. Lost a few trees to the wet ground and high winds but luckily no major damage. |

I'm one of 4 house that are dead in the water.
Might be a week before they get around to putting in a new pole. The good side is my job is without power also,so I get to stay home and run the genset every few hours and get paid for it!! I'll try to snap some pic's of the mess a few hundred yards from me a little later. |

I am in Glen Head, NY on Long Island and I didn't lose power yet a large portion of the area around me did and is still out. This was truly odd as usually a chipmunk can fart and our lines go down. I am two blocks from the local substation and anytime there is a line fault, there is a loud boom as the breakers kick in. It was going off quite a bit during the storm and my lights flickered but other than a single one minute outage around 5am, the lights stayed on. Line crews did a lot of tree trimming around here three weeks ago and I believe they also installed line fault protectors around the area which may have helped isolate a lot of the damaged lines from my part of the grid. In the past, a tree could hit the lines a mile away and take me out even though the substation is right next to my neighborhood. I drove to work in Babylon, NY on Monday and the portion of my trip north of the Long Island Expressway along NY-107 was dark traffic lights. Even this evenings driving home through the Brookville's and getting rerouted by the police due to a road closure, lights were out everywhere. Multimillion dollar homes all dark. I guess they had money for the houses but not enough to invest in a backup generator. I am truly shocked at how lucky I was with this storm. So many people I know are without power and will be for a few more days. In other news, Irene's sister Katia is growing larger every day. I wonder if that one is going to try and finish whatever work the big sister didn't. I am watching that one closely. |
| Wish I wasn't in an apartment....I have power here in CT but some of my fellow law students have been without power and will have to wait a few more days. One family member has power at home on LI (north shore), another is on limited generator power (fridge, some lights, heat (no A/C) but lost phones and cable. |

Lost electricity on Wednesday night approximately 1900hr, three days after Irene hit us Sunday afternoon. Seems LIPA shut down my block and the one parallel to my West because it was reported they had a downed wire. Searching the neighborhood, no downed wire was found anywhere. If they came out to remove the wire for safety, why not just complete the repair? Anyway, today (Friday) they finally completed their work order and I'm back in business as of about 1700hr. Luckily, I have natural gas for my hot water & stove or else I would've been eating room temp soup and canned vegetables at home for the last few days.
I really feel for those that have been down since the storm struck and have no idea when they will see service restoration. I think I see an emergency power system in my future. Never felt so powerless, no pun intended. |

Here in Ulster County, we lost power at 4:30 AM on Sunday, August 28th and not returned until 7 days later, yesterday at 1pm.....temporarily. At 1 AM this morning a thunder storm moved through and power was out for another 9 hours. So over the last 8 days we were without power for 186 hours. The generator got a good workout. I have trees to clean up. Had some water inside, but overall we had less damage than many folks. |

Quoted: Saw this yesterday on a back road in Old Brookville. The tree is being used to shore up the repaired pole with a rope as the guy lines were all yanked out of the ground: http://www.n2jtx.com/photos/PowerLine.jpg I'm no 'lectrical pole guy but I'm pretty sure the crew that did that would get their asses kicked by a supervisor for securing the pole to a swaying tree that could pull the whole thing down at any time. |

Wow, that's harsh! If this were the Survival forum, I could understand but sheesh! Quoted:

Anyway, I'm talking about installing a duel fuel (LP/NG) complete back-up system to power my whole house if when the grid ever goes down again. |
