Anyone know some good spots to hunt Prairie dogs on public (or private) land in KS? I'm trying to find someplace for me and one other guy to go shoot some prairie dogs in the spring after I get back. I've heard that the grasslands in southern KS are a good spot, but I have no idea where exactly to go.
Any help would be appreciated |

Contact Gene Bertrand of Bertrand Ranch (dont have the tel number offhand). He is 40 miles east of colorado in Wallace KS. He has 15,000 acres of land and 10K of that is/was PDogs... I did 6 hunts on his land from 2004-2008? He was a great host for many years. The first time we hunted, it was 50.00/day, bring all your own gear, water, food, hunt out of the back of a truck, no facilities and a hotel 1 hr away in Oakley KS. Lots of shots under 100yards so we used the .17hmr and .22mags. The last time we hunted, it was 150.00/day, which included lodging (in a 4 bedroom ranch house) (onsight) w/fridge/stove/showers/pool tables, BBQ grill. the ability to keep your lunch in the fridge, come in and wash your dusty hands, eat a relaxing lunch, etc was worth it. He also provided a shooting platform, which was amazing. It was a horse trailor, with the top cut off and a platform added. It had 4 shooting tables (swivel) w/a shade over the top. average shots were 250-300 so AR's were used. I believe family could stay for free and only those shooting were charged the hunting fee. (as if you want to bring the family.. )
You better be good on wind doping as a 20mph wind is standard and it may be L to R, R to L, tailwind, headwind or quartering and due to positioning, you often dont get to chose... I heard that the city was forcing him to poison his Pdogs a few years ago so all of this may be in vain... If you go, dont go prone as the rattlers are thick and as of 2008, the ER Dr. in Oakley KS was 0 for 2 on limbs. Take it seriously.... I had it down pretty good before I left, shooting out to 500 in a 15-20mph L to R crosswind. Hopefully there are still P dogs to shoot. |

Any help would be appreciated The Cimarron National Grasslands WERE a great spot to go shoot p-dogs. But...with the drought, huge range fires, an ice storm 2 winters ago that left several inches on the ground for over a month, and some bubonic plague, the p-dog towns are in bad shape. I was out there hunting antelope last month and there is NOTHING green out there. It was like hunting on Mars. If we get some water, the towns will come back, but it will be several years before they are worth shooting on. Your best bet now would be Walmart in Hutchinson |
