| Can I bring a pre-ban into NJ............. |
|
As I understand the laws in NJ, a semi auto rifle with detachable magazine can only have one of the following features... a pistol grip or a flash hider/threaded barrel or a collapsible stock. In other words an AR15 must be in a post ban configuration and can NOT say AR15 on the receiver. |
I heard that there was a time that you could register your pre-ban "assault" rifle and hicap mags and keep them. (the 1990 NJ assault rifle ban was the test tube baby for the federal 1994 crime bill.) |

Any "assault firearm" which was not owned prior to May 1, 1990, must be licensed. Application is made to the Superior Court for the county in which the person lives or conducts business. The fee is $75. The court must find that the public safety and welfare require the issuance of the license and the person must be qualified to obtain a handgun carrying license. For practical purposes, no one will be issued such a license They make you apply, charge you and tell you NO. ![]() That's NJ |

You can bring in the rifle provided it meets two conditions - 1) You remove the preban features - no lug, no flash suppressor, no threads and/or perm attached brake, no collapsable stock. Basically, make it post-ban compliant. 2) It is not a Colt AR-15. Any other model name/number is fine, NO AR-15! |
